2018 WTA Finals Preview: Thursday, featuring Billie Jean King

August 21, 2019

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the WTA Finals Singapore, where we are gearing up for the White Group’s final matches in the round-robin stage. Petra Kvitova will try to take her first win of the week over fellow Czech Karolina Pliskova, while Elina Svitolina will look for revenge against Caroline Wozniacki after losing to her right here one year ago. So here’s what you need to know. Petra is 3-0 against Karolina, but she comes in with two losses here in Singapore. How do you expect those dynamics to play out? I think usually they start over. So if she has wins over her then that’s gonna help. It’s a new day at the office. You never know. But Kvitova was very impressive, I thought, against Wozniacki. And Pliskova, it depends on if she’s serving well. Because Kvitova I think moves a little bit better. So I would look at their serves. I think that’s the thing: that whoever gets more first serves in, doesn’t make as many errors. Because usually matches are lost, they’re not won. And most people don’t ever think of sports like that. Occasionally you actually win a match, but most of time your opponent makes mistakes at the wrong time and that’s what makes the difference. It’s Wozniacki against Svitolina. A little grudge match, perhaps for Svitolina who really got dusted on the court here by Wozniacki last year. Yeah, it’s the battle of counter punchers in that match. Who’s gonna be more aggressive? It was, and has been, Svitolina this week. I mean, she’s been the player of the tournament so far through three days of the event. And just so impressive in how she has taken on this tournament, with her emotions. So positive, so intense, in the way that she’s been playing, and really playing with a chip on her shoulder feeling like she has something to prove here. Then you have Caroline Wozniacki, defending champion. And it’s for me the toughest out in tennis is Caroline Wozniacki. She will give you nothing. So it’s such a hard match to call for me. I think that Svitolina’s playing better and it’s just gonna come down to that: who’s playing better on that day. And even though Wozniacki did get that win here in Singapore, it is Svitolina who’s really dominated that head-to-head. So it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out I give the edge to Svitolina. I just think she’s got a fire in her belly here and is playing fearless tennis. So who will come out on top? Tell us your pick in the comment section, and we’ll see you next time.
