Andy Murray reacts to Wimbledon relegating Federer after Djokovic request

December 19, 2019

Andy Murray has backed Wimbledon’s decision to relegate Roger Federer to Court 1 for his quarter-final match against Kevin Anderson  Federer won his eighth title at the All England Club in 2017 and has played four consecutive games on Centre Court this year  But the 20-time Grand Slam champion has been pushed down to Court 1 after Novak Djokovic requested to play on Centre  Djokovic, a three-time winner of Wimbledon, has played just one of his four matches on Centre this year but will return to the main court on Wednesday when he faces Kei Nishikori  The decision has been criticised by some, who believe the reigning champion should play on Centre Court, but Murray understands the move  ‘I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court,’ the former British number one told the BBC  ‘The fans on Court One will love seeing [Federer], maybe Centre Court ticket holders will be upset, but they have two brilliant matches to look forward to  ‘Roger is playing extremely well, moving well.  ‘Against Anderson he has won all four matches and never dropped a set, so I expect him to comfortably get through  ‘It would take an unbelievable serving performance and for Roger had a bad serving day to cause an upset ’  Wimbledon appeared to make their decision on the scheduling after Djokovic requested to play on Centre Court  Speaking to the Serbian media following his straight-sets fourth-round victory, he said: ‘I think in a way I’ve earned the right to play the quarter on Centre  ‘We’ve put the request in to the organisers  ‘Rafa [Nadal] and Roger played  all four matches on Centre, myself only one.’  Djokovic has impressed at Wimbledon this year and knocked British hopeful Kyle Edmund out in the third round on Saturday  But eight-time champion Federer and two-time champion Rafael Nadal still stand in his way
