Australian Open 2020 night 1 recap

January 21, 2020

Australian Open 2020 night 1 recap: Novak Djokovic and Ash Barty advance but drop sets Top Australian Open contenders Ash Barty and Novak Djokovic have both advanced through to the second round, but surprisingly dropped sets in their opening matches. Barty copped a scare from world No.120 Lesia Tsurenko, with the unheralded Ukrainian taking the opening set against the French Open champion. Barty then appeared to regain her composure and ran away with the match 5-7 6-1 6-1. In the second match on centre court, seven-time champion Djokovic didn’t have it all his own way against Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. The No.2 seed was taken to a tiebreak in the first set and even dropped the third set, losing six consecutive games at one point, before winning 7-6(5) 6-2 2-6 6-1. The Serbian admitted pre-tournament his successful role in his nation’s ATP Cup title “took a lot out of him”, and he didn’t look at his absolute best on Monday night. The win was Djokovic’s 900th on the ATP tour. Elsewhere on night one 2019 semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas breezed past Italy’s Salvatore Caruso. On the same court, 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens collapsed against former Australian Open quarter-finalist Shuai Zhang, losing 2-6 7-5 6-2.
