Blue Bottle Jellyfish – Australian Beach | Short Documentary

February 14, 2020

The Blue Bottle Jellyfish also known as Man o’ War or Portuguese man o’ war is commonly mistaken as a jellyfish. In fact it comprises of four zoids highly specialized in preforming different functions. Each zoid can not survive independently as they serve a single function. but together they can function as a unify organism. The float is a living muscle bag that secretes its own gas and supports the rest of the colony and the sail on top of the float helps catch the wind. Tentacles are polyps that detect and capture prey. The stinging capsule contains a toxic mixture of phenols and proteins. Once the prey is captured it is them transported to the digestive polyps. They reproduce sexually as they contain both male and female parts

  • Reply he he February 18, 2018 at 6:37 pm

I live in south africa and our blue bottles are really small, they don't contain any sort of harmful poison (this video does not say so but others do) so if you step on one don't panic. It hurts bad but you'll be fine.

So many people. Want to poke and kill the blue bottles ,one said with a pair of scissors, others. Actually spend their time seeking them out just to kill them,
I can’t believe this, they are beautiful , live and let live, if you don’t like them give them space ……after all you are in thier house, but if one should show up at your house to visit. Then I guess do what you want, but it’s a horrible thing to do.
