Does Bill Gates Pay His Fair Share?

OK I assume this is a tenured professor at UCLA making a minimum of $350,000 per year. It’s expensive to live in California and this guy doesn’t want his tax rate raised. Also reminds me of the professor from Rodney Dangerfields movie back to school. Spending too much time in his ivory tower. I’ve been in business 40 years and trust me the rich do not pay The progressive rate tax .there’s plenty of tax havens ,loopholes, etc. to reduce those taxes many times over. He quoted Bill Gates because Gates is one of the few that actually pays his taxes!

Rich people pay their fair share but rich corporations don't. When you see mega corps like Amazon and Apple earning literally billions of dollars in profit but paying $0 in taxes that's a problem

Bill Gates or anyone should not pay any income tax! If anything we should pay a local tax based on how Efficient our local government is working! Look at states like California if you are a conservative you are paying taxes just like everyone else but are getting no representation!

I earn $71k/year. The govt steals $21-25k every year from me. They graciously refund me $1-2k when I file my taxes then tax me on my refund. Land of the free? Not when nearly half of Americans are paying jack and squat yet they receive my tax money in “benefits” that they did not earn. Marx would be proud of our Marxist tax system that is designed to buy votes.

I make less the $40,000 a year and I believe everyone should pay the exact percentage rate. Let’s say 5% for example if a person makes $1,000,000 then they will pay $50,000 and if a person makes $40,000 then they will pay $2,000. Yes the first person makes a lot more money but they also have to pay a lot more. But it’s a fair share for everyone

Fair share is actually the same dollar value amount per person, and is the total public expenditure divided by the population, with no exceptions. If you're not paying that much, then someone else is paying your share for you. So be grateful and thankful to those people, rather than whining for more and more handouts from them.

I have absolutely no problems paying taxes or even higher taxes. The problem that I have is the government wasting that money they collect. If we reduce the waste in government by half there would be no reason to raise anyone’s taxes. This is not a question of fair or unfair. It’s a question of waste. It’s like saying I have enough money to buy a Toyota but I want you to give me more money so I can buy a Ferrari.

I want to know how the top 10,000, or so, earners stack up in these statics. Those are the “rich people” we are worried about. I don’t think the 1% of the 1% are paying their fair share, and it’s almost structured to where you can’t get over that wealthy hump. The jump from mid 100K to over 500 is, as you mentioned, a rocky climb.

Simply put: the “Progressives” out there want to hurt the rich any way they can. There is no consideration of “fairness” in their doctrine. They hate people who are well off and will do anything and everything to undermine them. This is one of the biggest reasons why I can’t stand people on the Left. They talk a big game about “equality” and “justice” but their actions spin a very different tale about their intentions and goals.

How about this: Every American gets to chose what percentage of their taxes are disbursed to the different government agencies (roads, military, welfare, etc). Perhaps we will see the useless, corrupt departments falter. Any unused tax money by those departments at the end of the year will be given back to the taxpayer.

Fair is every woman can get an abortion regardless of whether or not she can afford a long weekend in Paris. Fair is that your success in life depends on your personal abilities and not on your parent's wealth. Conservatives should be ashamed that the ignore the fundamental goals of the US Constitution: "… in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, " Note there no mention of the accumulation and preservation of private wealth so worshiped by many only the "general Welfare".

The rich took advantage of the great resources of this country to get this rich. Often they also took advantage of the poor people in this country, because that's the biggest consumer base.
I wish for everyone to be rich, but when the average person in the 1% has 12500% more total net worth than the average American, that's stupid.
Please don't tell me they worked 12500% harder than the average American.
They should pitch in a reasonable percentage of their income, i.e. after making 1.000.000$ in a year they pay .50$ for every 1$ they make. This way millions of Americans can be helped out of poverty.
This isn't "unfair", this is reasonable. There probably isn't a single millionaire reading this, but there are people in poverty reading this. Teaching wealthy creates financial freedom for the poor, and only decreases the financial freedom of the rich by a little, little bit.
It isn't either socialism, or total capitalism. You can (and should) have a mixture. Giving money to the poor doesn't remove their incentive to work. Taking money from the rich doesn't remove their incentive to work either.
Thanks for listening to my Ted talk 🙂

  • Reply Jim Vlahos December 2, 2019 at 9:50 am

This would be helped a lot if corporations that pay ZERO in federal income tax actually paid. For example, in 2018 Amazon made $233 million in revenue with a PROFIT of $10 BILLION but paid ZERO federal income tax… NONE!!! Many other companies were in the same situation totaling more than $100 BILLION in profits that wasn't taxed at all. In addition to that many companies also got rebates makes their effective federal income tax rate not just 0% but actually NEGATIVE. Which means massive corporations were actually taking tax dollars away from the middle class.

And that doesn't even count independent wealth of many people that, due to tax loopholes, paid little to no federal income tax.

The claim that investments, risk taking and job creation goes down with higher tax rates on the wealthy is just a flat out LIE. In the 1950s the top tax rate was over 90% and there was huge investment, risk taking, innovation and job growth. The economy was doing fantastic.
