‘He makes you play bad’: Stefanos Tsitsipas dumbstruck after defeat to Rafael Nadal

November 4, 2019

Honestly, I have no idea what I can take from
that match. It’s not that I was even close to get to something. I only got six games
from that match. I don’t know, I feel very strange. I feel
happy with my performance in this tournament, but at the same time I feel disappointed.
I feel like I could do a bit better today. I don’t know. That’s how I felt. But it’s a very, very weird feeling. Almost
felt like just couldn’t play better. I don’t know. It felt like a different dimension of tennis
completely. He gives you no rhythm. He plays just a different
game style than the rest of the players. He has this, I don’t know, talent that no other
player has. I’ve never seen a player have this. He makes you play bad. I don’t know.
I would call that a talent. I don’t know, I’m just trying to think how
Federer beat him so… Similar game style like me. I’m trying to understand. I mean,
I don’t want to lose to Rafa 10 times.

Nadal is just way too good.. and I'm a Stefanos supporter. Either way.. Stefanos did very well in this tournament..

Nadal is too strong for him. End.

Simple lesson young man……You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

  • Reply Ivan B. G. January 24, 2019 at 7:11 pm

Well Stefanos… think this way, you were beaten by probably the BEST player in Tennis history. Rafael Nadal is not from this planet… He will be winning until the moment he will decide to retire, he is speed, courage, power, smart, gentleman, technic…. almost invencible, he is D.Rafael Nadal Pereira, that´s it

  • Reply Edward Fenn January 24, 2019 at 7:19 pm

Rafa is left handed and his shot has much more top spins. Federer doesn’t even have a winning H2H against Rafa. And it’s only in the past 2 years or so that Federer started to win more matches against Nadal (mostly he lost on the clay). Federer won the past five matches against Nadal, but he lost the five encounters before that. This is hard to practice cos Nadal’s play style is just unique. Unless you are able to have enough matches with him, like Roger did, it’s hard to figure him out.

  • Reply Linda Sun January 24, 2019 at 7:28 pm

I’m a huge Nadal fan, but I could feel Tsipsipas’s frustration. He’s only 20. He will have many more years to compete against Nadal. Maybe and just maybe he can claim victory against Nadal in a 3 set match. He should be proud of his accomplishments in this tournament.

The lesson you can take..hmm…what about humility??..

  • Reply Zoran Tesla January 24, 2019 at 10:19 pm

How roger beat Rafa? Stefanos says. My Greek brother maybe ask Djoković.

  • Reply John Gabriel January 25, 2019 at 2:01 am

Tsitsipas lost because he likes to hit the ball hard and Nadal makes sure the ball bounces almost shoulder level which makes it harder for Tsitsipas to return with a hard hit.

So as an armchair coach, I am telling Stefano, he has to practice returning those high balls hard. He is good at returning low balls fast and hard, but that's Nadal's secret weapon – Nadal makes the balls bounce high.

Next match I suspect Tsitsipas will win if he takes my advice.

Next gen will only come up once the Big 3 are retired. Until then they're gonna keep getting their asses whooped.

  • Reply QGodofGods RulerOfAll January 25, 2019 at 7:06 pm

Nadal makes every player look bad because Rafa is that good. A unique skilled athlete will never see again.

  • Reply QGodofGods RulerOfAll January 25, 2019 at 7:08 pm

He is a bit arrogant comparing his game to Federer's saying " I don't know how Federer beat him so many times"….Answer: Federer is better than you.

  • Reply Stefan Constantin Scutelnicu January 25, 2019 at 8:40 pm

Federer trained his backhand to take Rafa s spin lefty forehand as early as possible that s how he won matches on hard courts …Djokovic has the best 2handed backand in history and even recreational tennis players know that it is much easier to handle high bouncing ball with a 2handed bh …this is the reason Nole has a better h2h against Rafa !

  • Reply E. O. January 25, 2019 at 8:56 pm

Hey Dude.he is not that different.he is a lefty and hits very good topspin with his forehand. Many one handed backhand players struggling to find a way to play him..You should have known what to expect…

  • Reply 3 Minute Poetry Analysis January 25, 2019 at 9:05 pm

Rafa hits those high top spin forehands to his opponent's backhand — and if you have a one handed BH like Tisitsipas, you are in trouble — and then when Rafa gets a short ball return he goes cross court. He also changes the pace of his shots and doesn't give his opponent the same flat ball over and over again. Most players aren't used to playing against this style, especially a player who is lefty. Stefanos should watch the 2017 Aussie Open where Fed beat Rafa for pointers, like stepping into the BH early and not letting the ball get so high on the one handed BH. Also, watch that Soderling 2009 French open match and every match where Novak beats Rafa. He might also throw in some short slices to Rafa's FH to make him come into net. If he puts in the time to study these matches, he can eventually beat Rafa.

  • Reply marian maslak January 25, 2019 at 9:39 pm

Rafa's gameplan is simple to every opponent. Topspin to weakest link, which is backhand in each player department. Usually it works.

I actually think that Stefanos and Borna Coric are going to do the best out of the new generation. Stefanos is a very talented player, and has everything that it takes to be the next big champ. He just needs more expirience and he will gain it in matches like this. Borna is maybe not as shiny as Stefanos but I think he is a great baseline player with a solid serve and solid movement. And also a very important thing is that compared to other young players like Kyrgios, Zverev, Shapovalov… these two are mentally on a higher level. Also forgot about Alex De Minaur, also a great potentilal but in my opinion lacks a bit of strength. All in all i think that this new wave of players is promissing, but it's gonna be tough to overthrow the big 3.

You all down in the comments you are the arrogant to claim that an athlete should be humble and not compare himself with Nada or Roger. I mean how else will he learn? He actually searches for the way to win, and Roger has it and , yes, he is better. So what? He is an athlete, he has to compare himself in every match and learn and improve. AND YOU CANNOT BECOME ROGER OR NADA IF YOU ARE HUMBLE. then just stay at home watching tennis, court is not for losers…and I mean losers in mind 🙂 Also I think he is overall a very kind kid and he learns how to maintain his public image. He has just started…Also Nadal grew with Roger, he had to face him many times and Roger was also a bit elder anyway, he had built his skill. Nada is at almost the similar point. The youngsters have many to learn…and I bet they will learn how to seize the fire of Mr Super Nada Sayan…give them time 😉
