I wonder how Barcelona will remember Messi when he retires or leaves his team. I guess they won't be as affectionate as Naples is with Diego because Barcelona will still be a powerful team with many stars to come.

  • Reply Shteno November 8, 2017 at 12:58 pm

One of the most logical things which the city of Naples, and SSC Napoli need to do is when they (finally) build a new stadium (which they need it desperately – more than any other top club) is to also make a bronze statue of El Diego outside the stadium, just as Old Traford has B. Charlton, San Siro has G. Meazza, etc, etc.
A new, modern big stadium – not like those nonsense ideas we hear from A.D. Laurentiis in the last years, about building a small, 25K stadium – WTF is up with that? I know he has huge problems with the Italian bureaucracy, in his attempts in getting a permit to build a new stadium, or to buy out San Paolo and renovate it, but still, a 25K? Just to make them look like fools? If he does that, he'll only make the team look like fools and a small provincial club!
Napoli's current attendance is 47K, and if they have a new, modern stadium, without the athletic track, it'll only go up – all the examples prove that a team that builds a new & modern arena, increases its attendance by 10% to 25%. Just look at Atletico M., Bayern M., even Juve…Thus, Napoli needs a brand new stadium, with a capacity of 55K at least, preferably 60K! And with the statue of the greatest – El Diego (and a whole stand named after him, of course).
Forza Napoli & greetings from Macedonia!

Guys just look and compare the tackles and challenges of Maradona's era vs Messi's. I enjoy watching Messi, but I am quite aware of the butchers that wandered around professional football pitches before the 2000s. I think Football has evolved for the best, but at the same time it make it a little bit easier for "the health" of the players. Usually the rule is that the current times are always better (more competitive) than the past….but if you spend some time looking at how people tackled 20+ years ago, there is no comparison, the past was way harder for talented people like Maradona and Messi….the fact that Maradona thrived during those conditions, it is a statement of his genius. Just use youtube and watch how people tried to stop Maradona….just do it and compare with the actual times!

  • Reply Zayn Shaikh February 15, 2019 at 12:01 am

This comment section simply shows the ignorance of maradona for him to carry teams is a myth and all due respect/no offense a big fat load of bullocks, Napoli was built around him, as was Argentina.

I feel it is also lazy and false to depict Napoli as a one-man team and attribute their accomplishments solely to the presence of Diego Maradona. The 1987 scudetto-winning side was built on a solid defence made up of Giuseppe Bruscolotti, Moreno Ferrario, Alessandro Renica and a youthful Ciro Ferrara, with Fernando De Napoli and Carnevale (eight) also provided vital contributions. The defence was solid that season, conceeding only 21 times.

Similarly in 1990, Maradona was aided by the attacking talents of Gianfranco Zola and the Brazilian Careca, with Ferrara, Renica, De Napoli and Carnevale all still key players. Nevertheless, Maradona was undoubtedly the star of the team, and it is he who became the symbol of Napoli.

With 1986 and 90 his team was under the intelligent guide of Carlos Bilardo, who played a revolutionary 3-5-2, it allowed maradona to be as creative as possible without giving away defensive solidity, the team went back into a back 5 to defend centrally and on the wings. Their short passing style overwhelmed every side they faced, and dominated almost every side they went against, plus vs Germany when maradona was heavily marked, his team stepped up and won it for him, beckenbauer said after that they thought stopping maradona would stop Argentina, but it didn't, he said that that team was flawless and was one of the best sides that world cup.

This isn't to insult maradona or his achievements but rather get rid of that stupid myth that he was a one-man team.
