John Grant Jr. Back On The Field, Serving As Player And Coach For Denver Outlaws

October 10, 2019

JOINED BY SPECIAL GUEST FORMER DU LACROSSE STAR TREVOR BAPTISTE. SPEAKING OF LACROSSE, JOHN GRANT, JR. HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DOMINANT FOR DECADES. AFTER A SHORT RETIREMENT, JUNIOR IS BACK ON THE FIELD SERVING AS A PLAYER AND COACH FOR THE JUST LAWS. I SAT DOWN WITH THE LEGEND TO FIND OUT HOW HIS NEWEST CHAPTER OF HIS LACROSSE LIFE IS UNFOLDING. DEEP BREATH. RELAX. HOW DOES THE BODY FEEL? YEAH, A COUPLE MORNINGS I’VE WOKE UP GOING WHAT AM I DOING, BUT THEN MY DAUGHTER RUNS IN WITH HER EXCITEMENT AND THAT OVERWHELMS THE PAIN, BUT I’M IN PAIN EVERY DAY ANYWAY, SO A LITTLE BIT MORE TO BE ABLE TO DO WHAT I LOVE DOING IS OK. AT 44, HAVE YOU HAD TO CHANGE HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY PLAYING WITH ALL THESE 20s? THE BODY DOESN’T RECOVER THE SAME WAY. YEAH, I WAS A MESS PHYSICALLY BEFORE I RETIRED YEARS AGO, SO I HAD TO REALLY CHANGE THE WAY I LIVED OFF THE FIELD AND THE WAY I KIND OF PLAYED. DEPENDING HOW I’M FEELING AFTER A GAME, SOMETIMES IT CAN BE LIFTING AND I HAVE AMAZING FACILITIES AT AIR FORCE TO USE. I CAN RUN ON A TREADMILL AND TAKE AWAY BODY WEIGHT, BUT ZAIS AND THIS WEEK IT HAS BEEN JUST YOGA REALLY STRETCHING AND YOGA BECAUSE I JUST GOT TO LISTEN TO WHAT MY BODY WANTS AND RUNNING, BASICALLY, I PROBABLY ONLY RUN ON GAME DAYS. THE REST OF THE DAY I HAVE TO FIND OTHER WAYS TO GET CARDIO IN. STANDARD. YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE DRIVING 45 MINUTES JUST TO GET STRETCHED. WHY COME BACK? YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN INDOOR, OUTDOOR LACROSSE. WHY COME BACK? I GET THAT QUESTION A LOT AND PEOPLE ARE LIKE YOU’RE GOING TO RUIN YOUR LEGACY AND — I DON’T CARE ABOUT THAT STUFF. I LOVE PLAYING. IT’S WHAT I’VE DONE MY WHOLE LIFE. THE JOY OF PLAYING SUPERSEDES EVERYTHING ELSE WHETHER I HAVE TO BENCH MYSELF OR GET CUT BECAUSE I’M GOING TO BE INFECTIVE. I INEFFECTIVE. JUNE 27 I KNOW MY DAUGHTER IS GOING TO BE ON THE OF FIELD AND SHE BARELY REMEMBERS ME PLAYING BEFORE. SHE IS PLAYING NOW. SHE DOESN’T GET WHY OLD PEOPLE RETIRE. SHE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND WHY MY HAIR WON’T GROW BACK, BUT I THINK THE JOY IN WATCHING HER SEE ME PLAY IS GOING TO BE THE BEST FEELING, MAYBE ONE OF THE BEST FEELINGS MY WHOLE CAREER. THE PLAYER-COACH BALANCE, SO CURIOUS ABOUT IT. SOME OF THESE GUYS YOU’VE COACHED ALONG THE WAY AS WELL. WHAT’S THAT BALANCE LIKE? WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO COACH A GUY, BUT YOU ARE ALSO HIS TEAMMATE. YEAH, I LIKE THE NEW NICKNAME. THE REGGIE DUNLAP NICKNAME IS PRETTY GOOD. GOT RID OF THE GRANDPA OR UNCLE JUNIOR, BUT I WASN’T — THE WAY I COACHED THE OUTLAWS THE LAST FEW YEARS, I USED ALL THE EXPERIENCES. I COACHED FROM THAT EXPERIENCE. I AM OUT THERE KIND OF WITH THEM FEELING THE BLOWS THEY’RE TAKING AND EVERYTHING ELSE, BUT NOW TO BE ABLE TO DO IT ON THE FIELD, IT’S ACTUALLY EASIER TO GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS. WITH THE CROWD AND EVEN SOME OF THE WEATHER, THE NOISE GETS SO LOUD THEY CAN’T HEAR WHAT I AM SAYING. MAYBE DO IT THAT WAY. I HAVE A QUICK TRIGGER. WHEN I’M NOT PLAYING WELL, I PULL MYSELF OUT. I WANT THEM TO KNOW EVERYONE IS ACCOUNTABLE. YOU PLAY WELL. YOU PLAY HARD OR YOU DON’T PLAY. IT STARTS WITH ME. THE NEXT HOME GAME IS AROUND
