Kevin Anderson’s surprising reaction to facing Roger Federer in Wimbledon quarter-final

February 3, 2020

Kevin Anderson says he was not even aware that he was due to play defending champion Roger Federer after his fourth-round victory over Gael Monfils  Big-serving South African Anderson downed Monfils 7-6 7-6 5-7 7-6 today on Court One to book his place in the quarter-finals of the tournament  He will face eight-time champion Federer on Wednesday when the men’s quarter-final matches are contested  Asked about his upcoming match with Federer, who has won 18 Grand Slams overall, Anderson said: ‘I didn’t know the draw!  ‘I generally don’t look at the draw Next match. I mean, if it happens, it happens. If I find out, it doesn’t affect me Not a big deal.  ‘Personal preference, you know, obviously it was either his match or Isner, who beat Tsitsipas today  ‘Obviously not much explaining playing Federer; a great opponent, the greatest grass player of all time  ‘I’ve played him a few times and come a little short. The most important thing is to recover This was a long match, very gruelling.’  Anderson had only dropped one set in his first three matches at this year’s Wimbledon but was put under extreme pressure by Frenchman Monfils  Despite two heavy falls during the opening set, Monfils took Anderson to a tie-break, where the South Africa came out on top  It was the same story in the second set, before Monfils reduced the deficit in the third  Anderson wrapped up the victory in yet another tie-break in the fourth.  ‘It was a high quality match, I had to dig deep which makes getting through to the quarter-finals for the first time even more special,’ he said  ‘I had to battle hard today and pleased to make it one step further. I’ve played Gael a few times, this was the first time I was able to beat him  ‘He is tough to play, so you have to stay in the moment as much as possible.  ‘It sounds cliché but it is one of the most important things on a tennis court  ‘You have to try and keep looking forward and feel I did that today.’
