Kim Clijsters Inspires Serena Williams & Halep with Dubai Comeback

February 20, 2020

After nearly eight years away from professional
tennis, Kim Clijsters has officially began her second career comeback. Clijsters kicked off her comeback campaign
yesterday in Dubai falling 6-2 7-6, to Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza. Understandably, Kim was visibly rusty having
problems controlling her groundstrokes, and even serve. However, while 6-2, 3-0 down she began to
relax more and completely settled in. Flashes of the 4-time slam champion reappeared
as the Belgian began to hit her spots, going extended periods without missing. Using the crowd as fuel, she clawed her way
back and put us into a tiebreaker, but Garbine regained her focus and was able to shut the
door. Im honestly really impressed with Kim’s
comeback, and she definitely surprised me. I think we all were unsure of how things were
gonna turn out, many people doubting Clijsters ability to hang with the new wave of talent. She really held her own and made us take notice
for her upcoming matches. I do think that she can contend for big titles
again because to be totally honest, the inconsistencies of womens’ tennis allow for such successful
comeback. Clijsters is excellent player and I think
she has the game and experience to challenge these top women. Its also helps that she’s gonna be a fan
favorite almost everywhere she goes, because she’s likable and people love a good comeback
story. If she does want to contend for these big
titles, Kim obviously needs to clean up those errors and improve her serve consistency,
but I feel that those issues will resolve themselves quite easily after more matches
and practice time. Kim’s movement was pretty good and she even
implemented some of her trade more slides. To further enhance that movement and improve
her stamina, she could lose a bit more weight. That being said Kim’s comeback was a definite
success and has inspired to me and many others, including one of Kims rivals Serena Williams. Serena took to Twitter today expressing how
proud and inspired she was after watching Kims comeback match and understandably so. Simona Halep also shared how Clijsters’
return was inspirational, after practicing with her in Dubai. At 36 years old with 4 slams and 3 children,
Kim Clijsters has no reason to return to competitive play. However, she loves the game and loves to compete,
and we’ll have another chance seeing her do that in Monterrey next week. I think here she’ll be able to at least
get a match win and build on her game to get back in form. What are you thoughts of Kim’s Dubai Comeback? Do you think she’ll be able to challenge
for those big titles? Leave your thoughts in the comment section
