KT Tape: Wrist Sprain

August 21, 2019

This next apllication is for wrist sprains,
usually due to a fall or overuse and for this, we’re going to place the wrist in as
much flexion, or bending the wrist down as is
comfortable I’m going to take one piece of KT tape I’m going to tear the tape to form an anchor and from there Im going to have the wrist in
full flexion, or as much as is comfortable for the patient applying the anchor point on the back of the hand and then laying that tape down on the top portion of the forearm as I lay that tape down, there is no
tension on the tape for the second part of this aplication
I’ll tear another piece This one’s an I-strip, though this time I’m tearing the tape in the middle and from here I’m going to apply full middle tension to the tape applying to the back of the wrist though as I move that tails of the
tape up the arm, I’m taking the tension off the tape so zero to minimal tension on the tape as I apply that. I’m just going to rub that on there and make sure that it’s
actually on there and now you have that tape running up the arm, being careful not to pull the
tape too tight and cutting off circulation to the hand rub that tape on you can go ahead and relax the wrist and it’s that easy

@whavanas Nice- thx for the post. Does your trainer need some samples to send to his buddies in the NFL? 🙂

    does this really work?

  • Reply mauribest1 November 29, 2010 at 1:55 am

for how long shoud i use this ? meaning how long can those 2 tapes last me for?

  • Reply KT Tape December 1, 2010 at 8:31 pm

@mauribest1 You can wear KT Tape for multiple days at a time- including in the shower or pool. Generally the tape will last 2-3 days- but some applications such as the ones for back pain will often last the full 5 days. We recommend you don't wear KT Tape for more than 5 days at a time. Thx.

Hi, great videos. I am wondering what kind of wrist taping technique would be the best for tenpin bowling. Need some kind of wrist support but not sure which method is needed.

  • Reply KT Tape May 27, 2011 at 3:25 am

Sounds like you might need a customized app. Post on FB or on our website we have an "ask an expert" forum. Either location you can ask your question and we've got some docs and therapists that monitor those places (even Twitter) and they'll hook you up with a customized application.

i play goalie in soccer, and my wrist gets bent a lot from stopping shots. like my wrist "over extends" and hurts super bad, would this be a good tape job for my wrist?

  • Reply KT Tape August 6, 2012 at 8:21 pm

It should help add support and stability to your wrist. Try the KT Tape Pro version, it will stay on longer.

  • Reply StrawberryNinja Nibbles August 14, 2012 at 11:37 pm

I see that this wrist tape application is different from the updated version, does that mean that this way was deemed incorrect/ineffective etc? Why did the taping method change?
    Thanks

  • Reply KT Tape August 15, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Both methods are effective. The new method was simplified to make it easier to use. But if you prefer this method it will still work for you.

I have wrist pain on and off, and when it's hurting, it's almost all the time. When it's bad, it spreads to my elbow, too. Doctors have said it isn't CTS; might be tendonitis, but they're unsure. This pain has been happening for 10+yrs. (Oh, I sprained my wrist 3yrs ago, which didn't help.) Ice doesn't help much; an ace bandage helps sometimes.
I'm going to try KT tape, but want to know what's the best, since I saw 3 ways: this video("Wrist Sprain"), the "Carpal Tunnel" one, or the "Wrist" one?

  • Reply KT Tape November 19, 2012 at 5:31 pm

I would start with the wrist application on our website. Let us know how it works. You can also go on our "ask an expert" forum to get a customized application from one of our clinicians.

I sprained a wrist 8 weeks ago and I'm 15-I fell on it again today and it hurts pretty bad, I can't take another 5 weeks with a brace-that was the most annoying thing every, I'm considering buying some KT tape, would it help? My cousin is a doctor and I sent her a picture of my wrist and she said she could examine it but from what she saw, only a mild sprain, would this work for me? Thanks!

  • Reply KT Tape November 26, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Yes. It will help give you support and stability like the brace but it moves with your body. I would recommend the Pro as it will stay on longer. Try it our and let us know how it goes.

I think I sprained my wrist yesterday and it really hurts. I fell on it twice on my snowboard to sprain it and whenever I fall I fall on that hand. I use it for everything because it is my right arm. I'm almost 12yrs old. Any idea?

  • Reply KT Tape February 20, 2013 at 5:22 pm

Try the newest application for wrist on our website or the link at the beginning of this video and let us know how it goes.

  • Reply aBB123 May 8, 2013 at 8:02 pm

Is it hard applying it by yourself? I don't think i can manage to do this with one hand.

  • Reply KT Tape May 9, 2013 at 2:32 pm

You're right, this one is tough on your own. If you figure out a good way to self apply, let us know!

I sprain my hand will it recover itself?

  • Reply KT Tape July 23, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Most likely. The tape will help it recover faster.

    does duct tape work

  • Reply KT Tape September 19, 2013 at 5:01 pm

No. Duct tape will not move with your body the way the tape will which will not provide the same relief and recovery.

I'm recovering from a wrist sprain, but ive been taped differently by my therapist, he used one longer piece of tape (approx 16 inches) to run from the inside of my forearm, then went inbetween my thumb and index fingers and the continued down the back of my forearm. he then used a 10ish inch strip to go around my wrist joint. I cant do all this however with the 10inch KT tape, should i follow this video method? I found the tape on the inside of my forearm to seem to help but i dont know how necesarry it is

Alright, so I sprained my wrist about 2 weeks ago and it was starting to feel better – I was using epsom salts as well as one of those wraps you get from the pharmacy aisle.  Unfortunately, someone (on accident) grabbed, shook and squeezed my wrist, hand and part of my forearm and I am pretty sure, they re-sprained it because I am in a lot of pain all over again.  I thought this was all I could do, but now I am doing an article about Kinesio Tape and wow, I really want to try this!  I have a question though, are there stores I can buy the blue and the black tape?  Or do i have to buy it online?

This works great but if you have hairy arms shave you're arm hair! Trying to take this off is just as painful as a sprained wrist …makes me not Wana use the tape

  • Reply squ25 February 8, 2015 at 7:34 pm

Is it possible to use it has a wrist injury like me?
I was injured in 2004 when I ran back, full body fell on the my wrists, and from that moment on, I have a pain whenever you exercise or carry things light

I always wondered the point of the first piece of tape if there's no tension on it

  • Reply Nancy Javkhlan February 20, 2019 at 12:29 am

Will this help support my wrist and relieve pain. I have a weak wrist and I do gymnastics, which is a lot of pressure on my skinny wrist. Spraining my wrist is common and I’ve stopped going to the doctor to hear the same results. Bars of pain shoot up though my ulna 🦴 when I put pressure.
