Leadership lived: Mae Flight

August 21, 2019

Hi, my name is Mae Flight. I’m a junior here at UIS. I’m a Global Studies major and a Spanish minor. Here at UIS, I’m a part of the women’s tennis
team. I’m the co-president of the Habitat for Humanity
Chapter that we have here on campus. I am an International Student Ambassador as
well as I work with the International Student Services. I’ve been playing tennis for 10 years now. I started when I was 12 with private lessons
in Charleston, where I’m from. I think tennis and even just being a student-athlete
in general has helped me since being in high school because it helped me become organized
with my life and knowing that I did have something else besides school. I did have to really learn how to balance
school work and homework and just life and social in general and then coming to college
it was even a bigger difference. I like being involved with Habitat because
for me it’s a way to give back to the community. I am a very hands-on person. I do like the idea of building. I do like to meet the people that we’re building
this house for because they’re so grateful and it’s that feeling when they have smiles
on their face, when you’re building, that you’re like I’m doing this for somebody else. I love the idea of different cultures. I love people, I love everyone, but I’m super
invested in other cultures and I love learning languages. For an International Student Ambassador, basically
we are here as liaisons in a way between domestic students and the international students. I decided to come to UIS mainly because of
the tennis, because I was recruited here, but the other reason I came here was for the
Global Studies Department. I want to teach English as a second language
once I graduate. UIS has taught me to actually be more outgoing. I’m a series introvert and so since coming
to UIS, I’ve stepped out of that shell and I’ve put myself in a lot of leadership roles
and just to put myself out there to get myself more comfortable with meeting new people and
speaking in public and just overall bettering myself as a person.
