It's admirable that's these men found life after sumo. With age, I try to eat healthy and I still am gaining weight and it doesn't feel good. You know deep down that you're not healthy. Loosing weight whether from natural gain or from sumo training is so hard. It is a small miracle I think that these former sumo wrestlers didn't succumb to mental psychopathy, many would lash out against themselves or people around them. This is a good story to tell

Compared to the 1980s health conditions and life expectancy of a rikishi are far better nowadays. Also pension and opportunities after retirement for higher ranking wrestlers went up. But it is still hard for lower ranking wrestlers to make a decent living after their retirement without any higher education (save the ones who turned professional coming from university clubs), most become cooks. I guess it's a little bit like a rat race to be a sumo wrestler, especially considering the fact that a lot of the rikishi are from poorer families from the countryside with. They see sumo as a chance to do something meaningful with their lives.

This is the Japanese culture that I don't like. Sumo wrestling should be
banned. This sport is degrading human life. Let these men live a normal
life by having families. They should not eat beyond the calories needed
by their bodies. What is the point of winning a competition at the
expense of depriving a good life and health? Likewise, bullfight,
    cock-fight, Thai-boxing, Matador, horse-race, camel-race should be
banned. Many of these sports also provide a platform for people to
gamble. This is not the destiny of man. He has been created to develop
and prosper this planet. He should be the agent of peace and harmony in
this world. Let us work toward creating a better world.

There is also the fixed fight

It is not officially a national sport.

i remember from the 1950s there was many Sumo wrestlers that went into professional free style wrestling and catch as you can style wrestling Rikidozan is one great example
the facts are their muscles-mass where very strong because of their previous life and training as sumo but once they got back on their average weight and not being to old these man had some great stars in pro wrestling because of their strengt and experience i countering brute force i had a great playlist on this topic but its been taken down and deleted by you tube
but the god of wrestling ( Karl Gotch ) was very popular in Japan and had very good champion wrestlers coming from the Sumo background i loved that era of traditional wrestling and Sumo this all embedded in a awesome great & rich culture of the Japanese people

Fuckit, Imagine McDonalds sponsored a yank to get as fat as he possibly could only to miss his chance in the finals and destroy what could have been a lifelong career. Depressing AF, then again, yanks do it out of pride and don't really care much for the career part.
