One dead and many migrants missing as boat sinks off Greece

October 18, 2019

One person has died and 18 people are missing
after a sailboat carrying Syrian migrants sank in the Aegean sea between Turkey and
Greece. Greek and Turkish rescue efforts had managed
to save 18 migrants and Turkish coast guard units pulled a body of another migrant from
the sea. Greece’s maritime ministry said around 37
migrants were believed to be on board when the boat went down between two Greek islands. More than 135,000 refugees and migrants have
arrived in Europe by sea in the first half of this year, many of them fleeing war, repression
and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. Most are Syrians. Greece is the largest arrival point, putting
a huge strain on the country as it wrestles with one of the worst economic crisis of modern
times.

Immigrants are misinformed before departure that going to Greece for work is a good idea.
