Roger Federer explaining why he got angry (with subtitles)

November 16, 2019

There was a moment when
you hit a half-volley at your feet. And I thought ‘he comes from planet Earth
and not from planet Tennis’. I understand fully
why you got angry. But was it because
of a bad bounce Or you didn’t rise up
to your own expectations? I must try to remember
what happened before the bad volley.
I was… Q: There was a lob… RF: Yes but the fact that
I allowed the lob to happen already disturbed me slightly. that I didn’t already hit better
the first half-volley… Not sure was it
a volley or a half-volley I think a half-volley… I put the racket a bit… I didn’t hit that one right either. But that’s the danger
with half-volleys. He also saved himself well
with the forehand Maybe also a bit lucky. Then I hit a super lob. Then I thought
I’ll go to the net again And I should have volleyed
or gone to the net faster And so you make an error
once, twice, trice… And the forth error is just… yeah of course,
when it lands at your feet just hit directly in the net. You don’t even have to try.
So in this vein. And then you just want
to bury yourself But you can’t because
you’ll destroy the court The other alternative
was to destroy the racket But I thought I won’t
because I’d destroy the court The other alternative was
to get rid of the ball. Because anyway there was
a ball change afterwards. That’s why I don’t understand
the umpire’s problem. He’d also be happy that
the balls are gone then Actually I wanted to help. There were so many things
at that moment going through my head. I think I was even 0-15 Not sure,
might have become 0-30 Could be even crucial
for the match Mm, that was surely
another small… um.. reason why I tried to hit nicely in the corner
of the roof And I managed. That’s why I was very happy
with the shot. At least that worked
when the half-volley didn’t. Ai ai ai

    Hahaha brilliant!

The real reason for him being angry is that, he lost his no 1 ranking and to Coric. And now for Wimbledon he needs to defend 2000 points which means HE MUST WIN WIMBLEDON. And after that lost at Halle, he is thinking he won’t win at Wimby. Do you think he can win it?

It's not only him who face similar or even worse mishaps. But reacting that way and trying to justify it with a loooong explanation is not right for a man of his stature. If it was either Rafa or Novak, we will see quite harsh comments here.

Top athletes face such intense pressure and have such high standards for themselves, it is hard for average people to understand. Coaches will even say it is normal for top athletes to have intense reactions to their disappointments. This is why I love Federer so much – he explains all those things racing through his brain in the split seconds he has to make decisions and then execute on the court. Even when he "acts out" he still is thinking of what is the best way to react and even has a sense of humour about that it was a ball change anyway and a good shot placement, even though his game shot(s) were not so good! Amazing man.

There is another alternative – don't be such a hyper-perfectionist. There is a whole atp full of players who would love to make as 'many errors' as you do. This stupid perfectionism is why you were an angry teenager, and although you did a great job of not expressing it for many years, the fact its come back over the last few years when you've proved to everyone that you're not finished and are playing the best tennis of your career, just make you look so pathetic. Last year there were several occasions when you did exactly this (hitting ball into the crowd), but somehow got away with it like you were exempt from the rules, so I'm glad the appropriate code violation was finally issued.

…&, that's what separates Roger Federer from, not just other tennis players, other athletes in the world. It's his ability to be relaxed and comfortable in front of an open mic.

Federer is a humble and genuinely respectful individual who just happens to have the greatest pair of hands in the history of the sport. People who know who they are and comport themselves with humility don't have to worry about saying the "wrong" thing or offending others. This is why his interviews are often more revealing and entertaining than his matches!
