Roger Stone’s Arrest Reveals a Racial Double Standard – Between the Scenes | The Daily Show

February 11, 2020

– I really find, I
find it funny how Trump has stumbled
across many of the things he has ridiculed black
people for in America and he doesn’t even see
the irony in all of this. You know? For years, like, when
it came to the FBI and law enforcement,
all of that, black people would be like,
eh they have too much power, it’s crazy how they can
just say things about you. And then, you know,
Trump will be like, you should go to jail,
you should- and then now, he’s like, have you seen how
much power they have folks? (audience laughing) They can do whatever they
want, take your life away. I mean listen to the
thing they keep on saying about all of the people
who’ve been arrested. It’s not just Roger Stone. They did it with Manafort, they always bring
up the same thing. They go, he’s a 60 year old man. (audience laughing) Is he gonna spend the
rest of his life in jail? And that’s literally,
literally what communities of color have been saying
in America for decades. They’re like, you’re
gonna let someone spend the rest of their life
in jail because of, because of a mistake they made? I’m not disputing that
they broke the law but they’re gonna spend the
rest of their lives in jail and the people are like, well you break the
law you pay the price. That’s what it’s all about. And now, all of Trump’s people, this is the sixth person now, all of them are goin’
to jail, all of them. And now Trump is
like, did you see? In the middle of the night! (audience laughing) You’re like, and? They came into his house. (audience laughing) ‘Cause that’s where he was! (audience laughing) We’re just like, yeah,
that’s what it is. These guys are genuinely shocked when the police use
the same force on them that they’ve been using
on so many other people in the country unchecked. ‘Cause that’s what I’m saying,
I do think it’s extreme. I’m like, American police, especially if you
do travel the world, weird flex, you’ll see, (audience laughing) you’ll see how, like, it’s just police are
militarized in America in a way they aren’t in
most developed nations. You know? Like, it’s so weird for me, every time I go back to
South Africa, I’m reminded. I’m like, oh yeah,
being a policeman just means that
you are a citizen who has the job of
enforcing the law but it doesn’t put you
at a different level, it doesn’t mean you can
treat people like shit, it doesn’t- you, I’ll
talk to a police officer, I can disagree with
them, I can argue, still respectful, of course, for they can arrest
you if you go too far but it’s not like I
have to be afraid. You know, I don’t have to
be afraid of the person. I remember once, I was
driving in South Africa with my American friend and
the cop car in front of me, he wasn’t paying attention and
he like swerved into my lane and so then I hooted
at him, I honked. I was like, beep, and
then the went back in and my friend was like,
what are you doing? I was like, what he
came in to my lane! I was like, the guy
almost, that’s why you honk and tell them and he’s like,
you can’t honk at the cops. I was like, but, but I
did, he’s still a driver. I mean if the guy is driving
and he does something, I’ve gotta honk and
tell him, hey man. And then like in
America, I learned, you can’t even
drive past the cops. That’s like the
weirdest thing for me. When I first moved here,
I lived in California and I was on the freeway and I didn’t know like
the rules of America and so I was just like,
follow the speed limit and I’m driving and all
the cars are going slower and I’m like, you guys
are idiots, I’m gone. (audience laughing) And I’m going 55,
havin’ a good time, 55. And there was a cop car and
then I just drove past it. Right? But the cop
car was going like 40. I was going at the speed limit and then the cop car
like, came up here, and this is the funniest thing, ’cause the cop car
came up behind me and then like, wooo. And then I was like, in my head, ’cause I had done nothing wrong, look at the speed- I’m like,
oh, he wants to go past so I moved one lane over and
then the cop car came behind me and then he was like, wooo. And I was like, go around, man. And then I came back, (laughs)
(audience laughing) and then I came back into the
lane and then he came back. Then I was like, this guy.
(audience laughing) Like, I thought we
were doing that thing on the sidewalk, you
know when someone like, like you do that, I didn’t
think he was trying to stop me. I was just like, go
around, man, come on. And then finally he was
like, pull over, pull over. And then we pulled over and
then he gave me a long speech. He was like, sir, you know,
uh, you drove past me. And I was like, uh huh? And he’s like,
well, you know, uh, I don’t know where you’re from but out here, uh, cops, we
don’t like to be passed. (audience laughing) I was like, wow, okay. I was like, some serious
toxic masculinity right there, my friend. Like, I didn’t know, I was like, you just don’t
like to be passed? And then he explained,
no we do it for traffic. So, if you see a cop
car just stay behind it, don’t, you know. Then I learned from then on, that you don’t pass them
quickly, you gotta gradually, (audience laughing) so if the cop’s going
40 you go like 41. (audience laughing) We slowly go past the cop car. Then you wait for a
truck to come between you and then you fly, ahhh! (audience laughing) (upbeat music)

    (Long read sry)

I pass cops all the time, and never once been pulled over for it. If the limit is 45 and they're doing 30. By all means. Pass them. He's obstructing traffic. And if they do give you a ticket, go to court and tell them what was going on. I've been ticketed for 4 over, and not using a light to change lanes when the cop was up my ass in the middle of the night. I went to court and had my "speeding" citation dropped, because I was kind and respectful to both the judge, and rule of law.

The other I cited tailgating at 2 am, which made me nervous because I didn't know if the car needed to get around. Granted the officer was there, and was a dick about it saying he was trying to check my plate, which was why he was so close, and I tried to obstruct his ability to read it by changing lanes, while I flipped him off, as well as my windows being "illegally tinted." (They're not, they're clear with no tint."

I asking the judge if I could respond in defense of his accusations, she gave me the okay, "Thank you ma'am, (or sir) I didn't flip him off (start with the worst accusation first), I was motioning to tell him to pass after I changed lanes, and he continued to tailgate me. I believe he was trying to make me nervous to cause me to make a mistake. It was 2 am, and he sped up to tailgate me in a 55. I didn't even know he was a cop until he pulled me over. I thought he was someone who needed to get somewhere, and I moved over asap, so if for some reason I needed to jam on my breaks, he didn't rear end me. Furthermore, If he's not able to read 4 inch tall letters from a safe distance, I think he might need his vision checked so he doesn't cause an accident during future engagements with civilians who are nervous in the same situation." Judge dropped it after I said that. She told the officer to read some code (cited the code) because in the video she could see he was too close, since when I went to change lanes. She couldn't even see the signal light in the video frame.

Anyway, aside from my boring ass ramblings. If you ever end up in traffic court. Keep your cool and be as respectful as possible without sounding condescending.

TIP: In a courtroom, don't talk to the accuser directly. Talk directly to the judge as if you're the only two people in the room. Do not make any hand motions towards the accuser. Just keep them by your side or hands ONLY on the edge/side of the podium, NOT behind your back with your head cocked like a spoiled/disrespectful brat. Don't lean on anything. Respect the court room like you were in the military talking to a superior, or talking to your significant others parents, because that's exactly what you're doing is trying to be respectful. Don't look around the room with your head, don't have a staring contest with the judge, but also don't let them think you're ashamed to be there like you're guilty of w.e you're being accused of. #1 DRESS NICE! Dress pants, belt, button up collar shirt. No suit and tie, you're not a lawyer, or a fed. Don't go in with your stupid half baked hoodie, wife beater, baggy pants hanging off your ass, and 1000 dollar bright orange Nikes your parents got you. Because I can assure you, they don't give a shit about how stylish you are. They aren't going to fuck you, literally.

Don't get upset if they still give you the ticket. No kicking your feet, swinging your arms, or whatever you do when you feel defeated. Just say, "thank you for your time (sir or ma'am)." and go on your way. I've had tickets reversed because I thanked them. Sometimes they don't. In that case, after you leave the courthouse, then you can shit talk them as much as you want to your friends and family. But while you're in there. Don't say or do anything disrespectful.

I watched a guy kick the podium and call the judge a bitch. The guy spent 30 days in jail and had to pay another fine. Call it racketeering, paid mob, corrupt bureaucracy, police state w.e you want, because you're a rebel. It's the law and you're meant to obey it. It's the rules you agreed to as an immigrant and as a born citizen. Sometimes it doesn't go in your favor, or you know a guy, or you know a guy that knows a guy.

You're a citizen, you're held to A standard. But just like you, government officials are citizens. It might not seem like they get the same treatment a lot of the time. But those tend to he the only ones that are publicized. There's countless government officials sent to jail every year. You just have to find it because those stories aren't as high profile to the 24 hour fear mongering news cycle as "White cop shoots (insert race) person/child."

To me, those stories are only emphasized for one reason. And that's to make minorities scared and feel hopeless, like noone has their back.

You might not agree with me politically, or like me because of my race, religion or law abiding nature. But I'm in your corner if you didn't do it. And I think that goes for most. Even the hate fueled rhetoric slinging Trump supporters, or the Hate fueled rhetoric slinging Hillary Supporters.

If you made it this far thanks for reading. Here's a tidbit of information.

During Vietnam, soldiers would fire into the canopy of the forest because they didn't actually want to kill anyone. Not because they were pussies. But because they genuinely didn't want to kill or maim another human being despite racial, political, religious, and moral differences.

Read "Men Against Fire" by Brigadier General Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall, S.L.A. Marshall, or 'SLAM'. It's worth a read. Because as tough as we all want to look. We don't actually want to kill each other.

"The American comes from a civilization in which aggression, connected with the taking of life, is prohibited and unacceptable….The fear of aggression has been expressed to him so strongly and absorbed by him so deeply and pervadingly — practically with his mother’s milk — that it is part of the normal man’s emotional make-up. This is his great handicap when he enters combat. It stays his trigger finger even though he is hardly conscious that it is a restraint upon him." ~S.L.A. Marshall.

This was the best b/c it's so true! And funny. You try not to look at the cops either, unless you are at a stoplight, then it's cool to ask them a question. A cop in Milwaukee helped me find my way back to the interstate freeway at a stoplight, b/c the signs were a bit messed up.

I'm from Austria and if you're a civilian and approach a cop you can talk to them like you would with a normal person if they're for example just patrolling the area. (Not smalltalk of course but if you're not familiar with the city and have questions). I've seen them subdue people (in front of clubs or in aggressive arguments) and in those situations, everyone gives them space and doesn't interrupt. Then again, we have a very different relationship with our police force. They're marketed as 'ein Freund und Helfer' (a Friend and Aide) much more so than an all powerful God . I can honestly not imagine having to be afraid of the cops. What are you supposed to do when you need them (in the US)? For example if you've gotten into a physical altercation and the situation's become messy, how can you call the cops knowing someone irrational could turn up and shoot before making sure they know what's happened? Sounds almost like an Anarchy to me. Just the scenerio is terrifying.

You're not afraid of SA cops? You know we have protocol that we don't have to stop for cops and we can drive to the nearest well lit garage or cop station if they want to pull us over … yeah. Oh and if you don't have bribe money they will arrest you for something … or they will beat you to an inch of your life … or they are crooks dressed as cops and will drag you into the bush and rape you. Yeah, not scared of the cops at all … not one bit.

The only time you're not scared of a cop is at a road block with tons of other cars.

  • Reply Jorge Medrano February 6, 2019 at 6:44 pm

Trevor my man! You've nailed it, as always. When the law is applied to someone else, privileged people are all for it. But when it's their turn, then it's always unfair at the very least. The vast majority of people are treated like garbage. I have a cousin, we are mexican and he is a legal resident. He is in jail now because he did not remain at a crossroad where he braked abruptly, he did not harm the pedestrian, but he did not stay. He got a two year sentence for that.

This would not of happened to Mr. Stone if conservatives wanted to abolish the police or limit their power considering there the ones who say we need less government. But we need the police of course to protect the profits of big banks, insurance, and pharma. And we need them so the people dont try to exercise their bill of rights especially their second amendment rights.

Not an American here. A few months back, I just had a very minor accident with another car… turned out, the overly angry, hulk-ish husband is a police officer… and his wife was his exact copy. It was my fault, I admit, but they didn't have to be so degrading like I was a piece of dirt by the roadside, and threatened me with their harsh demeanor and words. My anxiety and social isolation didn't help. That same night, he sent a bunch of police officers on bikes to track me down at my house and everything. I was just a bit late to report on the accident.

Even if you have personal issues, you can't treat other citizens like dirt, even if they made mistakes that involves you. Be professional and please remember that you aren't a torturer, but protector of the people.

We’re all waaay to busy to keep up with political rhetorics of our nations own representatives. Or our neighbors for that matter.
So if people want to scream and shout at one another on the internet all well and good.

Exact same thing happened to me in March this year, right after I saw this vid. I was doing 70 on the interstate, saw a cop in front of me doing probably 75. I sped up a tad and came behind him, several car lengths away. He jumps into the left lane without signaling, slams on the brakes, jumps right (again without signal) immediately behind me (less than one car length) and lights up his gumballs and siren.
I was like "no, you have got to be fucking kidding me".
He was not kidding. Got a ticket and a couple of blunt threats. Since I have most of it on my dash cam I think I may take it to court and fight (the court date was set in July, for some odd reason).

That's so ridiculous! Why can't you go past a cop car?? XD hahahahaha omg. Definitly toxic masculinity. Right on point.

Uh yeah that passing cops bit is not a thing where I live I do it all the time never been stopped for that.

  • Reply Mike Jones August 17, 2019 at 3:07 pm

I seriously can't believe that but I know he wouldn't lie, I pass the cops if they're going under the speed limit all the time. Hell where I live most of the time if you look at the cops when they're driving down the road they're on their phone, some of them even swerve around in their Lane and a few times I've seen them slightly go out of their Lane

If you are a repeat offender with a zillion charges then yea…you will see harsher and harsher sentencing. Or, if you commit an egregious act like murder or rape, you will get harsh sentencing. Can you find objectionable cases. Sure. But its not this widespread racism narrative that people keep trying to peddle. And wait a second…you are saying that because rich white men are facing the consequences of their actions, that this is an indictment of our justice system? The left truly is confused.

I hate the terms “they” (white people) and “you people” (black people)… but I guarantee you will see “they” about half a dozen times in the comments below

  • Reply Lyle Roy November 19, 2019 at 9:13 pm

Fuck that cop Trevor. He was impeding the flow of traffic and when he pulled you over he was harassing you. Cops in the States can be complete shit bags. Not all of them. I actually had a good encounter with one in a city I grew up in where I was harassed many times as a teen and young twenty something. But about 3 years ago got pulled over by a young officer who let me know I not only had a tail light out but also was missing the tag on my license plate. He let me go with all the respect you've ever wanted from an officer. Not the same when I was a passenger and refused to give the officer that pulled over my coworker for a loud exhaust pipe and carrying a budding pot plant. They were nice to him but threatened me that they'd "see me later."

The cop thing is bizarre. Cops are just people here. Without guns attached to their pants.

Typical entitled liberal that thinks rules don't apply to them because of law enforcement doing its job! This clown was driving around a CHP officer slowing down traffic to aide either another officer whom was removing debris or helping a vehicle or livestock etc. Idiot follow the commands of an officer at all times! Its not always about you!

  • Reply Brett S. December 7, 2019 at 5:50 am

Definitely not the same amount of force… He was handcuffed while he was standing up. I'm sure his house wasn't torn to shit and not one cop groped his wife or shot his pet.

  • Reply Eduardo Ramirez December 10, 2019 at 3:28 pm

It also happens in Germany. Most of the people are being excessively cautious when they see police officers especially on the autobahn.
