Serena Williams Wins First Title as a Mom in Auckland! | Donates Earnings to Australia Bushfire

January 13, 2020

Serena is back in the officially winners circle. After five finals in which she fell in straight
sets, Serena Williams has finally got the monkey off her back, claiming the 2020 ASB
Classic title beating Jessie Pegula 6-3 6-4. I have to admit I thought we we’d be in
for yet another finals flop, as she got broken in the very first game with sloppy play. After facing break points to go down 0-3,
Williams flipped the switch winning the next 6 of 7 games to take the first 6-3. After gaining grabbed an early break in the
second, Serena continued to turn up the level pulling off breath-taking shots to hold three
championship points at 5-3. She was unable to convert and was forced to
serve it out, doing so at love to take home her 73rd WTA Title, and first since giving
birth to her daughter Olympia. Serena’s road to the title featured defeats
of Giorgi, McHale, Sigemund, Anisimova, and Pegula. Speaking of the latter 25 year old Pegula
played incredibly well the entire tournament especially the final, but Serena was far too
for her on today. Here’s a clip of the champion addressing
the crowd and expressing her relief of the win. All in all I’m very impressed with Serena’s
play this week despite some early bumps in the road. Her serve on fire, her movement was much improved,
and her groundstrokes are extremely solid, and one would be a fool to bet against her
reaching her 5th straight final at the Australian open. Besides her on-court play, Serena also did
some wonderful things as she announced that she’d be donating her $43,000 in prize money
from this week to the Australian Bushfire Victims which is great. The win is extremely important for her as
now she’s gotten over the hump of not winning a final. Serena isn’t the only woman raising a title
today for Karolina Pliskova outlasted Madison Keys in three tight sets for her 3rd title
in Brisbane. Karolina is also someone I’ve been impressed
with so far this year most notably her comeback win over in-form Naomi Osaka. She is definitely one to look out for in Melbourne. Congratulations to these two ladies, especially
to Serena who now hold 4 titles in 4 different decades. What are your thoughts of Serena finally getting
over the hump. Do you think this will help her in major final? Leave your thoughts in the comment section

Yes, this will help. She needed that feeling of finishing a tournament as a winner. It improved her play as well. She is in good condition and more importantly, her mental strength seems to be back on track. Congrats Serena πŸ™‚

Not only did she donate the $43,000 prize money to Australia but she donated one of her tennis outfits for every match she won to be donated off to help Australia. And I would be pretty sure she’s donated personally to Australia without making it public. It’s really good that Serena and other players have made it public that they are donating to the cause and that the WTA made it public that they are donating to the cause because it might prompt other people to do so.
