Training, everybody knows you work incredibly
hard and a lot. Your preparation is intense. Can you tell
our audience what video analysis means to you?
Because you use it a lot, even on your own matches.
I use it often, but it is more of a pleasure for me.
So, that means you can watch yourself, because there are many who say, “No, I
cannot watch myself play”. Well, honestly I like to watch myself play, but
it is more of a pleasure than anything else. However, you remember certain things. From yourself, but also from your opponent. So overall, it is a good thing.
[Sascha] What are we talking about? [Sascha] Everything he says is nonsense! [Stachi] Don’t you have a Match today? [Sascha] Yes!? [Stachi] So Guys, Town-Country-River, both of you tell me about it. [Domi] Okay, I do it. Sascha is not yery good at Town-Country-River. [Stachi] They are playing it. [Sascha] Why are we talking about the game where I am worst at. [Domi] He chose himself as a Player who begins with Z. And as a famous Tennis player he chose his brother! [Sascha] What did you chose? [Domi] For Z? You, but I did not chose myself. [Sascha] I did not chose myself. It was Horacio Zeballos, which was very good from me. [Stachi] I don’t know any Tennis player who is playing this game. Who had this idea? [Sascha] It was raining for three days in miami
and we played all the games. So, it was the only game left we could play. That was how we started playing it. [Stachi] Look at that, your dog. I always wanted to ask, where does the name come from? [Domi] I just wanted to say, Sascha is from the NextGen and he used his phone to much, so I said to him “Come on, let me show you what we did in the past to keep us busy.” [Stachi] Of course, you as the old expert. [Domi] He listens well to you. [Sascha] Yeah, very well. If Mom is not
around he does not listen at all. [Stachi] I heard, you are not training him. You just play with your dog. [Sascha] Of course, I train him. I take him for walks in the evening. [Stachi] That’s Training? [Sascha] Yeah. [Stachi] You know what I mean, dog school, sit and everything. [Sascha] You know that he is a spoiled dog, right? [Stachi] That’s what I mean! [Sascha] Well, there is no dog school. I let him do everything he wants. [Stachi] Does the name mean anything? [Sascha] It’s Russian for little Lion. [Domi] That little Lion is really frightening. [Stachi] One Question is bugging me right now but, don’t you have a match today? So shouldn’t you go and prepare for it? [Sascha] Me? You won’t believe how prepared I am. I’m focused and everything. [Stachi] What kind of guy is this? You understand each other, I love watching you train. Yesterday for example, I was betting that you would smash your racket after 10 minutes. But you didn’t! You were totally composed. Tell me about him, because
apparently I don’t know him that well. [Domi] I can say many positive things about him. [Sascha] That’s boring. [Domi] I also know some negative stuff, but I
won’t say them in front of the camera. [Stachi] Then just say the good things, I’ll take that. [Domi] He is a nice, smart Guy. We also appeared in the Vogue Magazine. [Stachi] Wimbledon, great Pictures! [Domi] We had some very intimate moments. [Sascha] They really wanted us to hold hands. [Stachi] Really? [Sascha] Yeah, they asked us if we would do it. But that was too much for us, so we said no. [Stachi] I saw the pictures. You were in a cool Outfit, a little bit lose. You didn’t like it? [Domi] No, I didn’t like my Outfit, but he did make up for it. So he saved me. [Sascha] At least we had some clothes on! The last time I was in Vogue I just had my pants on. So at least we got that. [Stachi] Could you say something about this Guy here? [Sascha] Something nice or exciting? [Stachi] What kind of Guy is he? Exciting? As you know I take everything. [Sascha] He is very funny. He has a lot of fun. You already saw a couple of time that
he smashed his racket. If he loses in any other game, he smashes everything else. One time we played Poker dice and in one Game he destroyed 7 Pens. [Stachi] Really? [Domi] Most definitely. [Sascha] After a while, he also threw the dice out of the room. And then the game was over. But no, he is one
of the nicest… [Domi] Just bad stuff about me. [Stachi] Could you be a little bit nicer? [Sascha] He is one of my best friends on the ATP Tour. Most people know that. We do many things together. I don’t care for boring people and he is
most definitely not one of them. We do a lot of stupid stuff together and it is good to have him on the ATP Tour. [Stachi] Before your father starts hitting me, could you prepare for your match? [Sascha] I am prepared, I did my warm up, I was showering and now I am wearing my Match Outfit. [Stachi] As a journalist I am not used to this. [Sascha] What else should I do?
If I sit here or there, that makes no difference to me. [Stachi] You are right, one last question about your brothers. Maybe your brother does it like him because, Mischa always told me that the little brother, is the one who is the better player. How can you support your little brother?
Because your advantage is, you already played with Roger when you were ten years old. Just because your brother trained with him, right? [Sascha] Well, not quite. I played with many good players because they
knew my brother. Because they knew my father. Sometimes I travelled
with them to some tournaments and when I was 13 trained with top 50 Players.
This also helped a lot and also helped me to be more confident. Because if you play against them in a Match
for the first time, you trained with them a lot and also got to know them.
But of course, the biggest help was my brother. He trained with me many times. He told me so many things, what to do at the tournaments,
how to be professional and maybe that is why it was a little bit
easier for me to get started at the tour. [Stachi] Does your younger brother also
ask you questions? [Domi] Well, there is one big difference
between us. My little brother will never be bigger than me. I am shure of that, but I think that it is great when the younger brother can emulate the bigger brother. I think it is the only time when you are
not upset but happy, when your little brother moves past you in the rankings. Just like
it is with these two. [Stachi] Do you know when my Job makes the most fun? When I have the change to Interview guys like you, thanks a lot!
You know, to be world number one
is very hard. You need to constantly be “on”, all year.
That’s a bit tougher for me, I think. But to be the best in two weeks,
that I can do. And this is what I aim for,
you know, so… Definitely, if I can be the best
in two weeks, it’d be great. I mean, I still have to believe
that I can win a Slam, and to believe is very important.
I think that’s basically it, you know. I feel good
and I have to believe and practice well. Then, for sure,
I will need some luck. And I will need to play
as tough as I can. I mean, we all have pressure. I don’t
know. It’s become natural, you know. I think the only pressure
is the pressure that I put on myself. That’s the real pressure.
The outside pressure, we always have it. “You’re doing good” or “you’re
doing bad.” There’s always pressure. And as I say, I think
it’s the flame that we have. It’s very hard to explain, but it’s
inside us, and we’re not giving up.
[Musik] Domi, we are back again in this beautiful location. This training camp is almost a tradition for you Tell us, is it work? Is it fun? Or is it both? I’m here for the seventh time now and things changed in a positive way, I would say. because the first three times I have been here I was on the ranking at 500 or 600 and I stayed at a little room with Günther half an hour away, gewohnt so eine halbe stunde zu fuß von [Stachi] That’s how the time is changing.. [Domi] Yes, that’s how the time is changing. And at this time we walked here every morning by foot, where I played with Ernest Gulbis And the last couple years, since my ranking is much better, I’m staying right here in this hotel. That makes it much more comfortable and since than, every day is really hard but I can relax pretty good every evening and most of the time I’m fit for the next day! [Stachi] You are always learning, are you doing something different this year? We saw a lot of pictures, there was the military training, that is kind of a a test of courage, What did you learn about last year? Do you make shorter periods? Or more intensity? How is it? [Domi] It is pretty similar to last year because last year it worked out pretty well I went out of the training camp in a very good shape and that’s why we didn’t change to much. Due to David Goffin da ist oft haben wir ein bisschen öfter we had two shorter training session, than one long one. But otherwise it didn’t changed to much. The fitness as well, just because last year worked out pretty well. [Stachi] We did this cool thing with the live training, everyone can watch it. A lot of people wrote: “Goffin is a really nice guy, we always thought he is quiet and arrogant” Domi, you know him for a longer time. He is really a great guy, right? [Domi] Yes exactly! I have never thought he is arrogant! [Stachi] Because you know him! [Domi] Yeah right, I know him almost my whole life He is a nice guy. Sometime he seems a little shy but he is totaly fine. [Stachi] You really went out of daily life, after the season, which was really hard, are you doing really nothing during your vacation or do you always have to do something? [Domi] I flew away for a week I didn’t do anything, only two or three times fitness with Kiki but nothing else. Than I played soccer and paintball one time. [Stachi] Okay, with some friends? [Domi] Yes, with some friends! Most of them are free right now. At this point I started moving myself again to get my body a bit more energy again. because to get the body from 0 to 100, isn’t good. That already went wrong last time here, went I got sick. so I’m trying to build it up slowly. [Stachi] Do you meet other players during vacation? It seems like all the players have the same destination.. Angie, for example is diving over there do you meet other players over there or not? [Domi] All on the maldives. Some always meet I have been there the second time, and was lucky to be the only one on the island. [Stachi] What is also good sometimes. You talked about Kiki, how big is the topic ‘tennis’ in your relationship? I think you are lucky, that you both are tennis players, because I think you would see each other not to often if she had a different profession . Maybe 15 to 20 weeks if it’s going well. Are you guys really talking about tennis or are you trying different things? For example, you are at a tournament. It is almost impossible to avoid it, right? [Domi] Then we are talking about tennis, during the vacation as well. Not necessarily about our tennis but about different view, stories, gossip and so on. That is definitely the topic, we know the best! We both know almost every player, also funny stories so we talk a lot about tennis and sometimes about her and mine tennis. In London she was with me as well and she had to practice over there, because our vacation was after that, and of course I tried to help her and other way around. She has some qualities, I don’t have and also other way around. zu produzieren und umgekehrt ist genauso [Stachi] I have to ask you a question may wife wants to know… Kiki gave an incredible interview about what she is appreciating about you. That sounded like a man of her dreams so you can be proud about that. What are you appreciating about her? I don’t find it easy. Of course she is a tennis player as well and she knows your life She is acceptating it and understand it more than others. So what are you appreciating about her? Why does it fit so well? [Domi] I like her character and her appearance, of course! [Stachi] Yes, that’s right. I can understand! [Domi] And it just happened, it has everything what is important to me in a relationship and in love. I’m not a big fan of looking for a relationship on the internet. And that just happened to both of us, she actually wanted exactly what I wanted and then it slowly developed and I think that’s why it works so well. And of course, because we both know very well about each other and also the profession, over the other his lifestyle. [Stachi] And you can also estimate each other. She knows when you need your rest. [Domi] Exactly and of course, because it never go out of stories, so it never gets boring which, of course, it is important for the future!
[Music] one I think the last time we met was in Halle after a great victory incredible things happened you are now top 15 player what changed with this is life different oh no it’s actually pretty much the same I mean you know I still I still do the same things I’m still the same person I think so nothing will change my ranking know is much better that’s the good part obviously and you know I think I think pretty much everything else is the same when you eat big guys like Phaedra for example you beat him twice this season and do you feel that there’s any difference how the people react when you come in the locker room or whatever I’m not sure about the locker room to be honest you know what I mean yeah I know I know what you mean because both are three blades someone since Amy’s once in the final and once in the same as well so our locker room was pretty much empty so I don’t know how they reacted but you know I get much more messages and the players you know we all kind of speak about it and I think yeah I mean it’s obviously you know a big surprise it’s also big surprise for me I didn’t expect its you know neither of the times to be honest I was just hoping to win I believe I came in but I didn’t expect it you know he’s just one of the of the best you know history of the tennis so you know just to play with him it’s it’s it’s always privileged and yeah that’s it no you a kind of role model for all the kids maybe we’ll start playing – no I heard that there are a lot of who say elbow natural this is a big one who was your role model when you start my role model was got on your knee Shh I’m Anubha cheek and also often a lot to be honest I was I was watching to them you know but to be honest mostly good on you initiate yeah I started playing tennis because of him pretty much anything you met a person 216 a very important boxer a big boxer because that’s also something you like boxing right – tell us a little bit about mr. Mike Tyson mr. Mike Tyson yeah I was I was really scared when I when I met him and I can’t imagine him you know I think he’s he’s very very nice person and you know I met him just for a very short time he was very very busy but you know I I do like boxing I was I was boxing when I was a little younger now there’s not so much anymore because of the tennis and you still do it for fitness maybe no I don’t do it because of of my ankles and my shoulders I cannot do it so it’s I don’t feel well afterwards but maybe when I stop playing tennis I do it more maybe I got a professional who knows last one last time you told me that when you were junior you were nearly crying after every point something like this I mean when I see you now how focused you are and all this how is it true and how was it and how did you change it yeah it was not nearly I was I was really coming at every point I lost very much you know since the beginning of the match till the end of the match even if I was I was learning set in the break I was still if I lost one game I start to cry because I would just start to panic that I’m going to lose the match so you know that was one part of my life which I think erima has it’s in some ways it kind of helped me you know it showed me that I cannot behave like that I cannot maintain my focus like that for a very long period of time so I think when I was 19 and I started to play on the tour I mean okay I stopped crying when I was 15 I didn’t cry on the tour but you know just just to be here like that and and to throw the records and you know just just go crazy on on the court I stopped when I was 20 when I when I saw all the best guys and how they behave yeah exactly and I just knew you know I can I cannot behave like that if I am if I want to be in some tournaments or if I want to be there you know be the best I need to change it and then the one day I just said okay I’m gonna change you know I mean I’m not saying I still go crazy some bows on the court but it’s more productive than than before well done Thanks thank you [Music]
[Stachi] Domi, a friend of mine, asked me an interesting question he also has a young star which wants to be a good soccer player This one question: What am I gonna do with the school? I guess you broke out of school after 9th grade because it got to hard to do both at the same time. Was it hard to make that decision? Did you… Now you obviously going to say that wasn’t hard to decide. But did you discuss a lot with your parents? Because you get a lot of support from your family, How was the decision for you? [Domi] My dad was always for tennis! So it wasn’t difficult for him! [Stachi] It’s also a risk! [Domi] Yeah, my mother wasn’t exactly the opposite, but she thought about it much more, about the school! So that’s why we had a lot of discussions and in the end she was fine with it, when I started with distance learning. What I didn’t do for a long time. [Stachi] At least you started! [Domi] Yes, I started and I stopped but I was still in school and continued learning When I saw the sport went in the right direction, I stopped completely! Where my mum wasn’t really agree with. I don’t like to say it, but high-performance sport and school is really really hard to combine! [Stachi] In America it is easier with their system but in europe it is really hard, I guess! [Stachi] Luki is here, a good friend of you do you still have buddies from school which you know for a long time? Those who say, it don’t matter if you are in the no. 7 in the ranking or a french open finalist… …we want Domi like we know him! And he still is like that! Do you still have friends like that? [Domi] Yeah, I know Luki since we are 6 or 7 years old. I do have 5, 6 best friends [Stachi] Oh, that’s a lot! [Domi] Yeah, but two of them, Luki and another one, I know from childhood. Dennis and two more, which I know from tennis but I also know since 15 years. Dennis is going the same way like me And the others know me like I am! [Stachi] I think your brother improved a lot, this year! I didn’t see for a while, I saw him Vienna Amazing, how do you see this improvement? I think he works hard and has a great
role model in his family somehow, For me… I mean he got his first points on the tour, where he was really happy about. How do you see him? [Domi] I didn’t see him much more than you [Stachi] That’s why I am asking! Did you feel like me? [Domi] It was a real supprise! When I saw him playing, it was a completly different player! [Stachi] He has power now! [Domi] But I think it also has to do with it, that he grew up! One year ago, he looked like a 10 years old. When you see other which are the same age, he looks much more younger! But he did a lot, also with Mike, in Austria, in strength and endurance. His fitness is really good! He finally got a good body, and that’s what you can see in tennis. He always was good in tennis and trained hard for it but now, since everything fits together, it looks pretty good! I was really supprised in a good way! [Stachi] Can you as brothers talk about everything? Because I think you have a close relationship. how it should be, the whole family! But does he tells you what he thinks? Like:’ Domi, that interview was completly bad! You can not say things like that to Stachi.’ [Domi] No, he alwas says the best things about you! But yeah, he always tells me his opinion. Actually we are completly different [Stachi] Yes, I think too! [Domi] He tells almost everyone his opinion I more likely the one who says what the other want to hear. When that is getting to much, he tells me his point of view. [Stachi]: And you accept that? [Domi] Yes, sure! Because I know, I have to be more like that. And on the other side I’m trying to give him some advice Where I know I have the more calm character. [Stachi] Domi, thank you very much and good luck for the season! Maybe for the conclusion, what if we met in the end of 2019 and you are going to say: ‘I’m happy about the season because,…’ What would it be? [Domi] I’m also happy right now, because I’m feeling good [Stachi] I know. [Domi] Yeah, but if I would win one of the big tournaments, that would be one of my life goals! That would be really great! I think I have the biggest chance in Paris. But you know and I know, how difficult that is. Everything has to fit But it’s not going to be the end of the world if I’m not going to win. And if we are sitting here in the end of 2019 in a similar situation, it is also fine for me! But I’m trying to do everything to win one of the big tournaments! That would be great! And if not… [Stachi] ..life goes on! I would be happy if the people stop saying, you are only a specialist for clay court. [Domi] Yeah, that would be nice. It got better after the US Open. But of course I’m working on it! [Stachi] I know that! Domi, it was a pleasure for me! Great place, good interview, thank you! [Domi] Thanks! [Stachi] That’s it!
