Welcome to the launch of the second book in the series on the environment of Adelaide. In the style of the first book, “Adelaide: Nature of a City”, this book is a comprehensive review of one of our society’s most pressing issues, how we manage our water resources. The book is a deep and broad analysis of the issues about water in the city of Adelaide. We’ve looked at the environment here, the climate, but also engineering, the aesthetics, the history of water, how people interact with water and water technologies. So it’s a really broad based approach and what we have done is approach the experts in water in South Australia and there are 130 of them that have contributed to the book and they’ve added their unique knowledge and experience and interpretation so that together we could pull it all together to get a good road map for understanding water in this state. Well, we wanted to bring together the information about this debate because it’s such a complex one and there is information from so many different areas and quite a lot of it hasn’t gained much airplay in the discussions that have gone on about how we should deal with water. The most important outcome, we think, is to provide the information for individuals, for small businesses and then for large organisations and they can take that information and use it for understanding water management improving their own water management processes and then participating with a strong knowledge base into the debate about what policies we should set for water in the future. We decided to make it unashamedly South Australians writing about South Australia because we’re the people who live with the consequences of our actions, our viewpoints. So, we have 130 odd contributers. They come from the educational institutions, Adelaide, Flinders and University of South Australia of course and from government departments, but many of them came from small companies that might be in the water industry and others were simply individuals with occupations or businesses that have some link to water but not a direct link into the water industry. So, they had a wide range of opinions, views, actions, activities and this information was really important for us because it showed not just the knowledge base, but what could be done. We had a fantastic editorial board that really joined in this program. We had great sponsors as well as great authors and a great production team, so about 200 people were involved in this in many different ways. That teamwork has created something which doesn’t exist in any of the other states. The book is available at all good bookshops and from the Wakefield Press, from their website. It is available from today.
