[Tennis Serve Lesson] Positioning Your Hand In The Trophy Position

Hi, this is Jeff Salzenstein, CEO of Tennis Evolution,
and USTA High Performance Coach and in today’s serve lesson,
we’re going to talk about how, if you keep your hand too far away from your head
when you get into the trophy position, you’re really going to struggle with your serve. You’re not going to be able to tap into your true potential. And we’re going to show you how you can fix that. So, let’s get to that lesson right now. The problem that we want to fix on your serve is that there’s a good chance that the hand is
too far away from the head in the trophy position and when I see that, that means there’s too much tension in their body, too much tension in the arm because when the hand relaxes,
and I should say the arm relaxes, you can bring the hand closer to the head like this and that’s where we want to be. I would say at least 80, maybe 90 percent of all servers have their hand too far from the head when they’re getting ready to hit the serve. I was guilty of this as a young pro and then over time, I was able to
get the hand closer to the head, so that I can accelerate to the ball
and feel more relaxed. So, I’m going to show you an example of where I focus on having the hand closer to the head instead of being out in this position
when I accelerate up to the ball. And for a lot of you out there, if you know that you’re too far away, if you get video,
or someone tells you you’re too far away back in here, you’ve got to think about almost
having your hand touching your ear in order for you to get to this position. So, it might feel like you’re really close,
but you’re probably not. Now, for 20 percent of you out there,
10 to 20 percent of you out there that are too close, you don’t want to do that. So, just make sure that you know that this is your problem before you start making this correction. So, here’s one in slow motion. That one felt really, really good. And again, I felt my hand was closer to my head. I didn’t let it get away from me, and that’s an opportunity for me to serve a lot better when I improve my technique in that fashion. Now, if you like this video,

    Hi, Jeff. Sorry for my english, i'm from Russia, Moscow. But i'll try to ask my question correctly). How do you think about position of the back after serve. Is it nessesary to hold it straight after you did serve? For example Murray didn't at all.

    Fabulous tip Jeff, this was the absolute key for me. I was repeatedly getting tennis elbow because my racquet arm was too stressed and extended behind my body at the trophy pose. This tip solved that problem instantly and has also given me added spin and speed with the natural pronation it creates. #tipsguru
