The saddest moment in “Jeopardy” history?

August 30, 2019

. >>IT’S BEING CALLED THE SADDEST MOMENT IN JEOPARDY HISTORY. AN EIGHTH GRADER LOSES FINAL JEOPARDY DURING KIDS WEEK FOR MISSPELLING A WORD.>>EMANCIPATION — WELL, BECAUSE HE MISSPELLED IT BADLY — YOU PUT A “P” IN THERE, PROCLAMATION. THAT’S UNFORTUNATE. THE JUDGES ARE RULING AGAINST YOU.>>THOMAS HURLEY III HELD BACK TEARS. HE LATER TOLD HIS LOCAL NEWSPAPER I WAS PRETTY UPSET THAT I WAS CHEATED OUT OF THE FINAL JEOPARDY QUESTION. IT WAS JUST A SPELLING ERROR. THE INCIDENT BLEW UP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA WITH MANY COMMENTING ON JEOPARDY’S FACEBOOK PAGE. HE GOT THE ANSWER RIGHT. HE MISSPELLED IT. BIG DEAL. HURLEY’S PARENTS CLAIMING THEY WERE LESS UPSET ABOUT THE LOSS AND MORE UPSET ABOUT HOW ALEX TREBEK AND COMPANY HANDLED IT, TELLING CNN THEY WERE, QUOTE, SMUG.>>WELL, BECAUSE HE MISSPELLED IT BADLY — >>JEOPARDY’S PRODUCERSES RELEASED A STATEMENT. IF JEOPARDY WERE TO GIVE CREDIT FOR AN INCORRECT RESPONSE, HOWEVER MINOR, THE SHOW WOULD EFFECT HELY PENALIZE THE OTHER PLAYERS. WE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE FAIR AND CONSISTENT IN THEIR TREATMENT. LAST YEAR, A CONTESTANT WAS PENALIZED FOR MISPRONOUNCING THE WORD WIMBLEDON.>>WHAT IS WIMBLEDON.>>YES.>>WE HAVE TO TAKE SOME MONEY AWAY FROM YOU, REED. I’M INFORMED THAT YOU VERY CLEARLY SAID WIMBLETON, NOT WIMBLEDON.>>BUT NO ONE HAS LOST AS BADLY OR BOLDLY AS CLIFF CLAVER ON AN EPISODE OF “CHEERS.” BUT THIS IS REAL LIFE FOR HURLEY AND HIS FAMILY WHO ARE STILL SMARTING FROM THE LOSS.>>THIS IS THE THING THAT GETS ME. EVEN IF THOMAS HURLEY, THE KID, SPELLED THE ANSWER CORRECTLY, HE WOULD NOT HAVE WON. THE BOY WHO DID WIN, 12-YEAR-OLD SKIEL LER HORNBUCK SET

Today, March 13, 2019, the show had a question about "a date which will live in infamy". Barton Wong… the contestant… answered "What is December 7, 1941", and was told that was incorrect. Another contestant said just "December 7"…and was told that it was correct! FDR…as I immediately recalled… DID say "December 7, 1941… using the complete date!
Well, Alex was wrong! Here is a video with the actual statement from FDR:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oVrv_EQing

As it turned out, Barton Wong still won, but I believe he was cheated out of the money from that answer.

What do the rest of you think?

more people write the answers so badly that Alex can barely read them and they give it to them as correct. So why penalize a kid for spelling something slightly off. He didn't spell it 'badly' as some have posted.

  • Reply Uchiha Ikoy April 10, 2019 at 3:44 am

Later that night, the kid emancipated all over his proclamation.

quite a few of you in these comments are real assholes. i've seen comments calling this child a "crybaby", mockingly welcoming him to the "real world", among other things. what is honest to god wrong with you people? this is a 13/14 year old CHILD who accidentally misspelled a word (hardly) on live television, then was essentially mocked by alex trebek to an entire audience of people and even more viewers at home. this is not a "real world" scenario, and this child is not a "crybaby" for being rightfully upset over being embarrassed in front of millions of people for a small mistake. it doesn't matter that he wouldn't have won, anyway – it matters that he was put on the spot for an accident.

not to mention, if you actually watch jeopardy, there are plenty of times where contestants have misspelled words in final jeopardy and they are still given the win anyway. in my opinion, i think the judges were in a sour mood this day and decided to give this kid a hard time, which is made worse by the fact that he was a child. can you imagine the slack he probably caught for this simple mistake? and don't act like you've never misspelled a word before; humans are not free of error, especially (MINOR) spelling errors. stop being pricks.

  • Reply Qe2 April 26, 2019 at 4:47 pm

If I’m a contestant and someone doesn’t answer correctly and the judges allow it I’m pissed AF. As long as the rules apply to every contestant it’s the smartest one who wins not someone who isn’t as smart just because we feel pity on them.

  • Reply CANADAWOOOOOOOOO May 17, 2019 at 10:29 pm

Well in Jeopardy you have to spell words right. Even in some categories you have to spell out the answer correctly instead of just saying it.
So sympathies for the kid dont come from that. It comes from how much of a dick Alex Trebek is. “He misspelled it badly” is such an asshole thing to say to any contestant, nevermind an 8th grader. He should have been more polite, i mean he is Canadian. How about “He got the right idea, but unfortunately he misspelled and our judges aren’t able to accept it, sorry buddy”

can't blame the show , if you're going to put an answer up you have to spell it correctly , you can't put an answer up with 50 % correct it's either correct or it's not , misspelling goes with it , regardless if it's kids or adults , i have seen other shows that people mispronounce words and gotten penalized , nothing new that they chose to do
