Why Ma Long withdrawn World Cup 2018?

August 29, 2019

Welcome back to my channel. Today, I want to present a very bad news. Ma Long has withdrawn from the Men’s World
Cup Table Tennis, which will be organized in Paris this October. World Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments
in table tennis. By not playing this tournament, the world
ranking of Ma Long on the “unfair” ITTF World Ranking will even drop more. And this will affect the desire of the Olympics
Tokyo 2020 of Ma Long. ITTF has announced the confirmed players for
the World Cup, and there is no Ma Long. Instead, Lin Gaoyuan will replace Ma Long. Some players asked why Lin Gaoyuan, his performance
is not very stable. Well, because he is the 2nd position in the
Asian Cup. China always wins the World Cup from 2010
to 2016. However, last year, there was a big upset,
that Timo Boll has beaten all of the top Chinese players in the Quarter, and Semi-Final. Ma Long explained on his Sina Weibo, “I am
getting thirty years old and I need to choose to attend some tournaments but not all. Don’t worry. See you at #ITTFWorldTour Austrian Open and
Grand Finals. Table tennis events at Asian Games will start
soon. Go, China!” But the real reason behind is not his age. Many coaches and players in China know the
reason behind this. So what is the reason? Some players say that it due to Ma Long’s
performance. At the present, Ma Long is not in a good shape. He lost to Harimoto at the Quater Final in
Japan Open this June 2018. Ma Long lost to Liam in the Bulgarian Open
at the first round. However, now we are in August. There are still 2 months ahead. The world cup happens in October. And 2 month is a lot for Ma Long to recover. Or he just wants to sacrifice for his family? The prize Men’s World Cup 2018 is $ 60,000,
the champion will be added in 2550, the runner will get 2295 points, more than 4 times the
ITTF World Tour Platinum (500 points for the winner). It’s very important if Ma Long wants to get
the point to participate in the Olympics Tokyo 2020. So the real reason is “the unfair World Ranking
system”. The current world ranking is not accurate,
and it makes the player feel unfair. Why? I have explained it in the previous video. But here, again, I want to explain: There are 2 bad things about the new system. First, the new system obliges the player to
participate in at least 8 ITTF tournaments. who do not participate in the 8 ITTFs will
affect the ITTF rankings. Especially the athletes who are the real top
player but older and will not be physically fit to participate in all of the events. Second. The new scoring method makes cumulative point
large, which makes chasing the score extremely difficult. Moreover, the new system is very unfair: You
won’t lose the point if you lose, only winning count. So the higher rank player just abuses, and
participate as many tournaments as possible, and don’t worry when loosing to the lower
rank player. So that’s why the current ranking system is
unfair. That they take the quantity over the quality
of the match. The true top players now have a very low World
Ranking. While the average players increase their ranking. Speaking outrage, the best players, the World
Grandslam are dropped out of the top 10 World Ranking ITTFs in early 2018. Meanwhile, when you win some Platinum ITTF
World Tour, and you can reach the top ranking. This unfair system makes that the huge event,
the most prestigious event, not as important as before anymore. You can only find the “big name”, the best
players in the most important event. But now, the “big name”doesn’t bother to participate. Because they feel “unfair” to this system. So again, nowadays, the Quality is dead. But it’s the Quantity who counts. But you know, as a table tennis player, and
a table tennis coach, someday, you will feel “tired” about this.

Will zhang jike be there? I wanna see him double grand slam

  • Reply Peter Chan Chan August 23, 2018 at 1:06 pm

Not exactly right as both quantity and quality are important. It seems that Ma Long is seriously injured resulting that he failed to be in form for a long time.

poor ma long..but im glad he already got his grand after this, just go with the flow…btw coach,do you mind sharing your equipment?blade and rubbers.hehe tq

I feel already tired from this system. Really upset about the world cup no Xu Xin no Ma Long no Ding Ning no Liu Shiwen this is a big disappointment. Like you said no big events anymore and big players have a very low ranking that doesn't reflect their level so sad about this.

Haha yeah, Ma Te is world number 445 as of the bulgaria open. Honestly, I would like to see more of Ma Te instead of Lin GY

  • Reply joonnytt August 23, 2018 at 1:13 pm

Ma Long became my star, he is a true athlet and loyal. Timo Boll is the sunnyboy because he is very fair and Waldner is the World Champion. Zhang Jike is the fighter. But of cause every one is important.

  • Reply Dawid Garboliński August 23, 2018 at 1:16 pm

Its not the real reason. If he wqnt to increase his ranking why not go to world cup? Still world cup gives more points than platinum wourld tour.

Sad to know, maybe its true.the top players of table tennis are not youre slaves ITTF management.

The new ranking system it's more understandable for the people, as it's same system as ATP. Today i agree it's not fair but next year it will more accurate. This system for me it"s good for the future of table tennis as the best players will play most of the tournaments. Best ATP players play lots of tournaments like Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, etc and this fact increases popularity of the sport.
So i think ITTF head search with this system increase the popularity of table tennis, as the best players could be seen around the world and more often also in youtube.

What a farce for a coach to say something like unfairness in the new system. The new system is better for the spectators. More top players mean more spectators. The elitists will naturally disagree and find the new system unfair. They care not about the future of the sport.
Secondly, the new system means more European players can face more Chinese players. As we have seen in the last few tours, Chinese are great against players they have analyzed and worse against unfamiliar opponents. This way, the Chinese will face more challenge contesting European as they have to study all players that bested them.
Lastly, in terms of unfairness, Chinese are obviously unfair. Unlike Europeans who are True pro, Chinese players are groomed and nurtured by the Country! They got salary, they work in team, they are working together to defeat several Europeans. As for Europeans, they don't have such luxury. So talking about unfair is dumb.

I'll like to make an exception to this 'reasons', there are a lot of drama and intrigues in China's table tennis system but that doesn't mean that they aren't normal people, they are ordinary people who lead normal lives and who makes their decisions.
The world ranking system is fine, everyone has adjusted to it, Ma Long as a grand slam champion and the captain of the team is accorded full respects in the team, and makes many decisions that regards to him and sometimes the team, what I think is the coaching crew wants to give Lin Gaoyuan more chances, ML knows he can't play every tournament, and he knows Gaoyuan and other young players must develop for the team, So he'll happily step down when he needs to, In the end, China is always about teamwork, you don't hear the players or coaches complaining, stop making irrational conclusions to everything, Ma Long is just 29, he's not 37 or 41, Europeans at 29 still play for a really long time,
Stop making assumptions of what the Chinese team are thinking or doing and eventually thinking or wrong and painting them in a bad picture.
Ma Long has said he'll play at Austria, he's already played 4 world tour events this year, Austria will be the 5th and then he'll be invited to the grand finals, He's already timing his appearances to his taste, he's not making an issue of this, people should stop.
He's won a grandslam already, he can as well retire now and he'll forever be a legend and possibly the best. Do you think he doesn't want Gaoyuan and the young'uns to succeed too he's a very humble and selfless person.

I think it is possible that China is quietly letting other countries & players have a chance to win. Look at the decision to remove Coach Liu Guoliang. That was a first step. Then the new ranking system. Coach Liu Guoliang said in one of his interviews that at first they (China) were only concerned with winning, but that now they are also concerned with how to grow the sport globally.

  • Reply MV13 August 23, 2018 at 6:44 pm

Like many other unfair decisions of ITTF!!new system of world ranking is not based on players Quality of playing but rather based on players existence in any matches!!so seems that ittf prefers rather political decisions than athletics ones!!they just want to make all top players to take part in any even low level competition! to satisfy table tennis fans!!while most fans disagree!!

  • Reply Gustavo C August 24, 2018 at 3:11 am

ZJK didn't whitdrawn from korea open due to his back injury, that was a protest against ittf swapping players in the middle of the tournament. So a lot of players are angry with ittf.

  • Reply K August 24, 2018 at 3:24 am

Wait so is it because ma long and other players like him have a low ittf world ranking that they are not participating? Like is it that he is just not allowed or is he, or some coach, not choosing to participate.

  • Reply Roger Nguyen August 26, 2018 at 9:44 pm

Without Ma Long at the World Cup in Paris the winner will be lucky not to have Ma Long playing !!

  • Reply Ergo Proxy August 27, 2018 at 7:32 am

The ITTF does not care about the best players, they care about "diversity" and a whole load of other bullshit things. They are destroying this beautiful sport.

Has ML or any other big name told you that he feels unfair and doesn't want to play to these tournaments? Or is it just your opinion?

  • Reply Roger Nguyen August 29, 2018 at 3:32 pm

No one can replace Ma Long only Zhang Jike in very good shape but he won't so the only one Ma Long !!

  • Reply Leeman Harrington August 30, 2018 at 9:28 pm

Older players may not be able to keep up with the new ranking system but the same is true in any sport. It's not ITTF's fault.
You have no proof that there has been a dip in participation from top players because of the new ranking system. Additionally, if a seeded player loses to a lower ranked player in the first round, they don't get any ranking points! They still have to worry about losing to lower ranked players.

So is Ma Long just sulking? Asking best players to play 8 tournaments a year is fair, we want to see them and 8 tournaments is not a lot! Most of rest of world work every week all year!

  • Reply nimish madanan September 4, 2018 at 12:35 pm

Ma Long, we are with you.. you are world's no:1…

  • Reply Zoltán Kasza September 11, 2018 at 9:19 am

The old system being complicated doesnt mean its bad, on the contary it represented the skill. Any online competitive game ladder has a better accuracy than this stupid system.
It ok to have some "punishment" to those who are overly ianctive, but being very active shouldnt result in gaining better rank.
No points loss? If you lose to a much lesser player you SHOULD lose more points. Simple mathematics.
So now the elite players are forced to take part in lesser tournaments to maintain rank?
Not to mention the fucked up seeding this system will result.

  • Reply Timmy Az September 16, 2018 at 11:14 pm

Hmmm… If the top players won't lose any point against the lower level that would encourage them to play more tournaments
