Why Serena Williams Lost To Sofia Kenin | 2019 French Open

August 14, 2019

Serena Williams will have to wait another
tournament for that 24th Grand Slam title as she has lost to 20 year old American Sofia
a.k.a Sonya Kenin 26 57 in the french open third round. Sonya was the better player throughout the
entire match striking the ball tremendously well and even cleverly mixing in some drop
shots to test the 37year old’s knee. Coming out the gate she won her first 9 service
points and continued to comfortably hold serve for the next set and a half. I was also very impressed with Kenin’s nerve
as the crowd was constantly on the youngster for continuously challenging the line judges
calls. I also expected her to give in after losing
her 3-1 second set advantage and being down 4-5, but she kept her head down and continued
to fight. Now moving the topic over to Serena Williams,
I have to say that Im both surprised and not surprised by this loss. Everyone raises their game when they face
Serena and I expected Kenin’s steady baseline game to rattle a potentially error prone Williams. However I still believed that Serena would
be victorious due to Kenin possibly feeling the pressure in the latter stages of the match. This was actually not the case as Sonya was
very aggressive, many times overpowering Serena and was the steadier player nerve wise. There were many times Serena had chances to
extend her lead in the second set or close the gap whenever she was down, but she made
it harder for herself with her erratic forehand. As NBC commentator Mary Carillo pointed out:
When Serena’s footwork is gone so is her game. With her lack of footwork Serena robbed herself
of preparation time on her forehand which is why she ended up faltering on that groundstroke. In the 11th game of the second set Serena
had a easy put away forehand, but pushed it long. This sums up how that shot held up for her
today. I also feel like Serena’s serve and return
started to let her down towards the end of the match. When she was coming back her serve was on
fire and won her free points. In the 5-5 game though it completely went
away as she struggled to make first serves allowing Kenin into the points more. On the return side of things, Serena had her
best chance of winning the set when she was up 4-3 30-30 on Kenin’s serve. Instead of continuing to apply pressure, Serena
went for too much on the return gifting Kenin the game subsequently the match. After her tight first round match,Serena told
reporters that she was extremely nervous. This could be because she realizes that unfortunately
the time is ticking for her body and the knee problem could be getting worse and worse. As a long time fan and admirer of hers its
disappointing to have her at less than 100% but like she always does, Im sure she’ll
find a way to work it out and be ready for Wimbledon. Do you believe Serena will be ready come Wimbledon

A drug tester knocks on her door, She locks all the doors and her windows, calls the cops telling them theres a robber out there, hides in her safe space and then calls the boss of wta tennis to sort it all out for her. She should just leave tennis and hide in her safe space forever.

Hard to move around that big body at her age. She probably should have skipped this event as clay has never been her best surface. I know she is playing to break Margaret Court's grand slam record but time and her age appear to be against her doing that. I'm sure she would have retired already, if not for her chasing the record.

She will bounce back. Champions have a very powerful mindset, this game is just too much for her because sonya is continuously challenging her groundstrokes. She also needs to tune things up for Wimbledon.

It’s going to be hard for Sarena to win another G.S. if she skips a lot of the other tournaments. Besides lack of match experience (even the best need it) her higher rankings will match her early with quality opponents.

  • Reply bellabana June 2, 2019 at 11:16 am

Henin using drop shots against Serena was good tactics as she’s currently too slow & heavy to reach them as is making her run as much as possible. Otherwise Serena just stands there & hits her opponents off the court with pure strength.

INJURY is the greatest, if not worst, enemy to anybody. Its condition shouldn't be under-assessed nor over-assessed that would lead whosoever to a sour-grief attitude. If he/she survives/wins in a game/match ,should be grateful and if the opposite, then, accept. PRACTICAL.

Steady decline…… she spends too much time posting pictures on Instagram and not enough time getting match ready. How do you expect to win Grand Slams when you don't play the smaller tournaments leading up to the slams. Yeah okay, knee injuries this time around for the excuse. She does well walking around on the knee posing for pictures.

Get off your ass and play some good damn matches!

  • Reply irfan djalil June 2, 2019 at 2:26 pm

Because her time has passed. She accomplished so many things. She has nothing to prove anymore. She spent too much time in this part of her life, time to open another chapter.

  • Reply leoninc June 2, 2019 at 4:29 pm

Will she be ready for Wimbledon? It really depends on her. Serena will need to continue bring herself back to form. She can easily do that, only if work on her movements, and she has a good trainer to make that happen. Focus on the game, her opponent’s tactics and not the opponent. Control her sometimes angry rants to avoid losing focus. It’s not over for her yet, and she has many opportunities to win another grand slam.

  • Reply Lady Wander June 2, 2019 at 8:42 pm

It depends entirely on her I think she has max 2 GS in her but she needs to get lean, let's be honest having a baby especially at her age did not benefit her as an athlete her job is to be quick nimble and energetic.
I predicted she would not win a single GS earlier this year because she is not a threat anymore so her losing is not a surprise. If SW was a lot slimmer she would've won, her age has nothing to do with it she got to 2 GS finals AFTER having a baby, last year. The US Open controversy, constant death, racist and transphobic threats Im sure is FINALLY starting to take its toll especially since she is no longer in her prime. The racist hate her so much they do not want her to tie/beat Court's record and they thrive off this but it's a shame to see her possibly go out like this :/

STEADY DECLINE. The thing with the Serena sisters is that they refuse to admit the fact that they can not be court divas forever, there will always be a changing of guards at some point and I am feeling it has already come.

  • Reply Bal Pinoy June 3, 2019 at 2:53 am

That's the problem of UGLY WOMEN LIKE SERENA who can not capitalize on their physical aspects that is why they just continue to play and play and play and spread HAVOC and ARROGANCE on the court. She grew up thinking that she will be the diva forever that is why her MORAL VALUES ARE DECADENT, just PURE EVIL!

Good analysis, thanks. I think Serena can't just rock up to GS events anymore with no match play under her belt and expect to hold the trophy aloft. Though to be fair she had a knee injury that hampered her attempts to play more pre-RG events. She needs more match play at pre-Wimbledon events to have any hope of winning. Another worry, is that other players are no longer seeing her as undefeatable: they now see her as vulnerable and less of a threat. Despite all of this, Serena has at least a few more GS wins in her (in MHO). She just needs to play more tournaments to hone her game and be ready for today's younger and desperately eager opponents (e.g., Kenin). She's way, way better than any of them. She just needs more match play at pre-GS events. Practice alone is evidently not enough.

If Sofia Kenin can avoid serious injuries in the future, this young American is not going away!! Not only does she have the tools to beat other top women pros, but she has a grit and focus about her that is unparalleled. I like her attitude on the court: although some would interpret it as cocky, I think she is simply driven to just get better and better. Honestly, Serena has no excuse to be "bothered" by Kenin's insistence on line call checks. If that is all it takes for the 23-time grand slam champ to go over the edge or trigger "stare downs"Β toward a 20-year old, maybe it's time for Serena to step aside. Mitch Long

Serena lost bc she's up in age very close to 40 in September.
She's accomplished so much. A tremendous tennis career that the world will still be talking about even 50 yrs from now (Margaret Court not the same) If the world is still here, we all know that! Some would say she squandered her time, fame distracted her and even gave some games away like this one. Mark my words, she will never win another grand slam again. But that's ok. It was fun watching her fight play dominate. Retirement is inevitable resistance is futile. This will be her last year. She should rest and focus on enlarging her family like she has talked about. Thanks for entertaining us Serena!

Kenin was able to cope with Serena's power and move her around the court really well. Serena's footwork just wasn't there and she struggled to track down balls often looking off-balance. To win more slams, she's gonna have to work on strength and conditioning, as aerobic capacity decreases with age, and play more tournaments, as training can't replicate pressure moments in tough matches. People expect a lot from Serena whenever she plays, but between the Australian and French Open she'd only played 3 matches, so her exit here didn't seem like a big surprise to me.
